The Property

Close to Wandsworth Common in south-west London, this large period property is home to a young family with two children. The project involved a big renovation, including an entire ground floor reconfiguration – specifically the removal of a large section of the rear structure to create an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area with direct sightlines from entrance to garden – and the addition of rooflights and a large picture window to maximise light and garden connection.

The basement was also upgraded to house a new gym and utility room, and the main bedroom suite was comprehensively reimagined with double doors, a walk-in wardrobe and a luxury en-suite featuring a freestanding bath in the bay and double shower. The garden was also redesigned with an outdoor kitchen, dining area and integrated lighting and storage.

The Brief

The client’s background in fashion played a key role in shaping the home’s aesthetic. Much like a couture collection, where texture, layering and proportion are essential, the interiors showcase carefully considered design choices, including refined details and sophisticated colour palettes. Bold contrasts sit comfortably alongside softer tones, bespoke joinery complements the more playful elements, and every room has been curated to feel both personal and cohesive. The result is a home that marries elegance with warmth, creating a stylish and welcoming retreat that’s designed to be lived in.

LET'S TAKE THE TOUR

Hallway

The hallway creates the first impression, seamlessly blending historical charm with modern elegance. The timeless checkerboard floor is reinterpreted in black and white Emperador marble with warm undertones, and a metal Crittall-style opening to the formal reception room enhances natural light and opens up the space. Meanwhile, the charcoal-painted entrance door with its stained-glass panels softens the traditional feel and adds a contemporary edge.

A nod to the property’s Victorian heritage, a grand plaster cornice and delicate ceiling rose subtly reference the more classic motifs, while full-height fluted panelling and a streamlined pendant – a reimagined globe light in mouth-blown opaline glass – introduce a modern counterpoint.

A bespoke cabinet sits within a recessed nook, topped with a large arched mirror that reflects the metal balustrade and contemporary herringbone stair runner. This interplay of tailored joinery, reflective surfaces and lighting redefines the space, ensuring the hallway is not merely a passageway but a statement of the home’s character.

Formal Living Room

Tucked away behind Crittall-style doors, this serene living space is the epitome of quiet luxury. The room unfolds in a palette of soft neutrals – chalky whites, warm creams and a whisper of blush – allowing texture and form to take centre stage. High ceilings with ornate cornicing and a classic fireplace nod to the heritage again.

A velvet moss-green sofa introduces a gentle hint of colour, grounding the space with understated richness, while two crisp white armchairs invite conversation or quiet moments with a book. The oversized artwork above the fireplace provides the room’s main focal point – a soft blend of pink, gold and lemon pastels that adds warmth and dimension. Flanking the fireplace, two antiqued white ceramic table lamps add symmetry and a subtle touch of glamour.

The Playroom

Brimming with charm, this light-filled children’s room feels imaginative and uplifting. The starting point was a piece of the client’s own artwork – a colourful composition of jelly sweets – which informed the room’s joyful colour palette and became the creative anchor for the entire scheme.

Walls are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Bone Chinese Blue, and the same hue drenches the bespoke arched joinery. A bespoke window seat tucked neatly into the bay adds both function and fun with its tailored patterned seat pad and mix of bright, tactile cushions. Overhead, a bubble chandelier floats like a cluster of balloons, its playful form the perfect counterpoint to the ornate cornicing above.

The Downstairs Cloakroom

Tucked just off the main hallway, this chic cloakroom feels more like a jewellery box than a purely functional space. The walls are finished in a rich dark green limewash – a bold and tonal choice that adds instant depth and drama, while creating a moody contrast against the lighter elements in the room. The standout feature is the floating vanity, crafted from bespoke Crema Evora marble in soft peach and blush tones, its swirling veining polished to a gentle sheen. Paired with brushed brass wall-mounted taps and minimalist fittings, it achieves the perfect balance between quiet opulence and contemporary restraint.

The true conversation starter is a playful framed photograph by Paul FuentesCalifornia Dreaming, depicting a pastel-hued car beneath Californian palms. It introduces a touch of humour and sun-drenched optimism, perfectly balancing the room’s darker, moodier tones.

The Kitchen

The heart of the home, this open-plan space was designed to maximise natural light while maintaining a calm, contemporary feel. A predominantly light colour palette is punctuated with deeper tones for contrast and definition. The chocolate-hued kitchen island, topped with a bold-veined porcelain waterfall, anchors the space, while glass-fronted cabinets and a bespoke arched pantry provide structure and detail. A chunky display shelf offers space for the client’s ornaments and cookbooks, adding personality without clutter. Rust-coloured herringbone bar stools introduce warmth and texture, balancing the deeper tones and connecting visually with other accents in the room.

The main splash of colour comes from the client’s large cat artwork. This inspired the room’s secondary accents, including the rust stools and emerald-green bench, creating a playful yet considered colour story that ties the space together.

The Study

The brief for this study was to create a sophisticated, moody retreat. The walls, ceiling and joinery were painted in a rich dark brown-grey to introduce drama and craft an immersive backdrop for the client’s striking artwork, Man Eater by South African artist Norman Catherine. A light-textured rug softens the space, while a bespoke burr wood desk anchors the room. The deep brown cotton-velvet muffin chair complements the walls, adding warmth, depth, and a sense of character.

Dining/Living Space

Here, the dining and lounge areas flow together effortlessly. A bespoke travertine dining table serves as a tactile, sculptural centrepiece, surrounded by green textured chairs and illuminated by a linear pendant light. Chocolate-striped armchairs with curved armrests complement a bespoke glass coffee table, a mohair ottoman, and a large L-shaped sofa. All of them rest on a custom-designed rug in soft pearl tones. Colour is introduced in subtle, curated ways, with a selection of the client’s own artwork adding personality and softness.

Main Bedroom & En-Suite

The primary suite flows seamlessly from bedroom to walk-in wardrobe and en-suite, unified by a palette of soft neutrals, burgundy and green. The result is a space that balances elegance with comfort.

In the main bedroom, contrast plays a defining role. Dark wood floors ground the space, while soft, light walls provide a calming backdrop. A feature headboard wall combines tailored panelling with linen-textured wallpaper inserts, softening the architectural lines and adding warmth. The bespoke petal-shaped headboard, upholstered in sumptuous burgundy velvet, commands attention as a bold focal point, while a large silk rug enhances the sense of luxury. Custom burl wood bedside tables introduce richness in texture and scale, perfectly balancing the room.

The walk-in wardrobe mirrors the panelling and linen insets of the bedroom, creating visual continuity. A pouffe in tones that echo the bed cushions ties the spaces together, while thoughtfully designed cabinetry keeps the vibe serene and impeccably ordered.

In the en-suite, natural stone takes centre stage. Calacatta Viola marble, with its dramatic burgundy veining, is paired with glossy green glazed tiles to add depth and vibrancy. Small-scale, marble mosaic flooring introduces tactile interest, leading the eye toward a freestanding bathtub elegantly positioned in the bay window. A bespoke walnut vanity with fluted detailing references the bedroom’s dark wood floors, ensuring all three spaces speak a cohesive, luxurious language.

The Kids' Bedrooms

Both children’s rooms were designed around their favourite colours – light blue and soft green – using a bold, colour-drenched approach across the walls and joinery. Each room combines playful feature wallpapers with distinctive panelling details, ensuring both feel imaginative and unique.

In the Lulworth Cove blue room, a striking red striped wallpaper is used behind scalloped shelves and an upholstered bench in matching fabric adds depth and cohesion. Bamboo-style panelling introduces texture and a sense of craft, while vibrant yellow, pink, and red accents in the cushions, lamps and artwork bring energy and contrast.

The gentle green room takes on a whimsical theme – a striped window seat provides a playful burst of colour and works well with the patterned Roman blind, layering patterns and tones in a way that feels fun yet considered.

The Gym

The once-underused basement has been completely transformed to maximise both form and function. Now fully tanked to eliminate damp, it houses a compact utility area, discreet plant rooms and a contemporary gym. Designed to feel warm and inviting despite its subterranean setting, the space combines oak flooring, arched LED-lit mirrors and flexible track lighting to create an atmosphere that’s both energising and soothing. A timber-slat feature wall cleverly conceals a hidden door to the plant room, while the client’s chosen artwork – a striking photograph from the iconic Muhammad Ali versus Sonny Liston heavyweight rematch – anchors the space.
