Look Around This Contemporary Country Home

When this family relocated to the UK, they called on visionary architectural and interior design studio Echlin to create their dream home. Focused on wellbeing and craftsmanship, Echlin creates spaces that carefully consider the relationship of the property to its surroundings. These values are clearly on display in this Oxfordshire project, as creative director, Samuel Pye, explains…

The Property

The property is a newly-built contemporary home on the edge of an ancient woodland, not far from Oxford, designed by NCA Architecture. It’s just over 3,000 sq ft and spread over two floors, with a large-open plan living area, additional reception rooms and five bedrooms, three with en-suites, and the principal room has a walkthrough dressing room too. The owners, who are a Singaporean couple who have moved to the UK for the first time with their three teenage children, loved the open plan layout, the abundance of light and beautiful views.

The Brief

Echlin was asked to inject some subtle luxury into the home, elevating the base-build architecture and creating spaces that were comfortable yet refined. Our response was to create a warm and inviting home that feels modern, curated and grounded. The design sought to soften and elevate the contemporary architecture with well-chosen pieces, organic textures and a thoughtful, understated vibrancy.

Our concept was all about juxtaposing wild organic textures and materials with contemporary lines and finishes, inspired by the way the modern architecture sits at the end of the surrounding woodland. Since our clients were moving to the UK full time, we wanted to create a celebration of local design and makers, alongside incredible pieces from the rest of Europe. They would tell us about their travels along the Mediterranean coast and in the Nordic countries, so we felt that we had to explore beyond some of our favourite local suppliers. We worked closely with the teams at Artemest, who source the best in Italian made pieces, alongside the likes of Arflex and Cassina, and Scandinavian suppliers like Carl Hansen and &tradition.

The clients chose to source everything through us, from large scale furniture all the way down to towels and cutlery – the family arrived just with suitcases. Everything we sourced has a story, and the provenance, maker or artisan is known to the team. Echlin specialises in sourcing as local as possible to the project, bringing in as many craftspeople as they can whilst also looking to use vintage pieces to cut down the carbon footprint.

TAKE THE TOUR

Living Room

Situated on the ground floor, this room has floor-to-ceiling, retractable glazed doors that can be opened to link the terrace outside to the cosseting interior. Inside, a Marenco sofa from Arflex in textured cotton fabric – designed by Mario Marenco in 1970 – sits alongside two Utrecht chairs designed by Thomas Gerrit Rietfeld in 1935 for Cassina, covered in in Ortigia Cayenne velvet fabric by Dedar, to bring a distinctive warmth to the space in both colour and feel.

A bespoke, bamboo viscose rug in a rich, earthy tone, is carefully juxtaposed by a vintage Paolo Piva travertine coffee table with its black lacquered levels from Béton Brut, which was included here to reflect as well as contrast the ancient Oxfordshire woodland. Alongside the russet-coloured, angular Utrecht chairs, the monochrome Artemide Shogun table lamp creates a statement, both in shape and by offsetting the earthy colour palette.

In another seating area, an Italian crafted leather modular sofa from Artemest with pleasing rounded shapes echoes and envelopes the unique McCollin Bryan coffee bean table, handmade in south London. Accessorised with cosy cushions from Yarn Collective (‘Burt’, ‘Tarragon’) and Metaphores (‘Nomade Ficelle’), these rich colours are complimented by the large nature-inspired painting commissioned from Scottish artist Arran Rahimian and the muted stripe rug. The artwork that sits over the bespoke, low-slung, walnut shelving is ‘Gypsy in the Wind’ by Louise de Lima, purchased via Laura Fulmine’s MAH Gallery

Kitchen & Dining Area

Linking to the living room along the ground floor, also with retractable glass doors opening onto the outdoor living space, is the kitchen and dining room, where this family comes together. Central to this is a bespoke grand oval travertine dining table from Notting Hill-based Momina Watton’s Atelier 278, surrounded by ten elegant walnut Carl Hansen T chairs. Above the dining table is a bronze and reeded glass pendant – Strata – by British lighting company J Adams & Co; three pendants from the same brand – Slim – are positioned above the neighbouring kitchen island, which also houses five &tradition Betty Bar black stain timber stools with natural webbing.

Terrace

On the expansive terrace that runs the length of the home, Echlin chose a Vipp open air sofa accompanied by a Ferm Living level black coffee table, two crate lounge chairs and a matching side table in iron red by HAY, alongside HAY’s palisade lounge sofa.

Main Bedroom

Upstairs, the master bedroom has been designed to make the most of the light and is full of bespoke furniture pieces and considerately sourced pieces. Designed especially for this home by Echlin and handmade in Berkshire, the bed has an exposed frame and is upholstered in a deep green velvet mohair by Dedar, either side, bespoke bedside tables in elm – also designed by Echlin and made by London-based Heliconia Furniture – have brushed stainless ironmongery and Ceppo antique stone tops. A textured Nordic Knots rug adorns the floor, while an Italian curved sofa from Artemest and a travertine coffee table by Atelier 278, sit on a green textured round rug, combining to create a private lounge space. Completing the room is a vintage Mario Bellini 1974 floor lamp sourced from London-based Darling Studios, and a specially commissioned and Echlin designed timber wall sculpture by Corrie Williamson, inspired by 60s atomic style.

Guest Bedroom & Child’s Bedroom

Further special furniture pieces characterise these two bedrooms, including an olive velvet armchair, playful Normann Copenhagen pleated table lamps, artwork by Mary Claire Smith and another bespoke bed designed by Echlin with a curved shape, upholstered in a Yarn Collective mint green bouclé fabric, and a vintage blue mushroom table lamp from the Netherlands.
