The Property

Can Linda is a double-storey villa situated in the north-east of Ibiza, between Santa Gertrudis and Santa Eulalia. It was built in the 1970s and has undergone a transformative three-year refurbishment. Originally drawn to the home for its unique setting within a mature garden of palm trees and cypresses surrounding a large pool, I saw the potential beneath the surface of a worn but glamorous residence. The existing elements – from Carrara marble flooring to an oversized bathtub and some California Regency style furniture – hinted at its past and provided a strong foundation for the design.

The Brief

Along with my brother Dimi, I had long wanted to have somewhere where we could retreat from our busy city lives and enjoy the calm of the north-east of the island, and where we could entertain and cook for friends and family. Two of the biggest organic farms are nearby and an outdoor kitchen was a must.

The house was remodelled to create two equal main bedrooms for us both on the upper floor, with a very large, shared terrace covered in a bespoke blue and cream Alalpardo Bert & May cement tile and outdoor shower. An additional room for our mother is on the ground floor. There are two outhouses for guests – one is a mid-century oval pavilion in a striking Mexican pink.

Bert & May tiles act as a visual thread throughout the villa, tying together the distinct spaces while reinforcing the home’s identity. Cement Alalpardo tiles in a bespoke blue and cream were created for the expansive terrace, handmade Naranja Terracotta features throughout the property and the distinct, raw aesthetic of Bert & May’s Marrakesh Hessian Bejmat tiles pave the exterior entrance to the villa.

TAKE THE TOUR

The Terrace & Swimming Pool

The open-plan ground floor floats from inside to the outside with large sliding doors that lead from the dining room onto the terrace. The various seating areas are covered with a simple cast iron and natural cane pergola. Honed marble in Bert & May’s rose pink, green and white tones add sophistication and texture to the pool areas, including the steps and border.

The Kitchen

Cooking and entertaining are a central part of our life and south-eastern heritage. A large inside-outside kitchen was essential. The blue black and natural timber was the perfect choice for a rustic but modern Ibiza interior. The countertop is in Ibiza stone, a soft brown marble, while a large sink made of the same marble has two taps and offers plenty of space. A bespoke marble lid on the countertop offers easy access to the bin. The kitchen is also filled with pottery from Kati’s London Studio.

The Living Area

Our living room is dominated by a vintage Berber rug from Tunisia, which belonged to our parents - it's featured in the living rooms of all the houses we have lived in. It is hand woven on narrow looms by Bedouin women and the four widths are stitched together. The very decorative pattern has a lot of red in it and bits of yellow and black. We used black glazed tiles for the fireplace surround and the bookshelf to pick up the black in the rug, creating a slightly darker room that is mainly used for reading and sitting around the fireplace in winter.

I opted for three smaller coffee tables that keep the room flexible and floating - we chose green and black in three different sizes and shapes. The black table picks up on the tiles and the green picks up on the windows and door frames. A vintage armchair covered in a cotton velvet sits in front of the fire, and a modern cream sofa, simple linen curtains and a daybed rounds off the room. Art by Kate Gibb, a London-based silkscreen artist, hangs in the living room. Her palm series are amazing and perfect for this house.

Bedroom 1

The starting point and colour scheme for my bedroom was a very large black and neutral kilim that I had in my collection. It’s a special one-off flat weave from Iran and six metres long. It is a great way to create a calm and neutral atmosphere and the black, naturals and browns are carried through the room.

This large room includes a sitting area for occasional work and calls, with great views out onto the terrace paved in Bert & May’s bespoke tiles. Wool fabrics were used for the bespoke upholstered bed and headboard, as well as the mid-century sofa, while a vintage black leather steamer travel trunk serves as a coffee table. The bedside tables in sage green and Moroccan-inspired wall lights round everything out.

Bedroom 2

This very bright second bedroom with large French doors to the east and south, as well as an en-suite bathroom, also has access to the large outdoor terrace. Whites and blues are applied to the entire space, with custom two-tone blue lacquered bedside tables. There’s also a bespoke headboard and vintage tan leather chairs.

Bedroom 3

The third bedroom was based on a green colour scheme. Green checks were used for the bed, which is topped with a stunning large bolster cushion covered in a fabric that features the same date palm we have in the garden. The room is small but includes a private outside area.

The Pavilion

All in pink, inside and out, this room is a lovely retreat for guests when they come to stay. I love the contrast of the plaster pink walls with the dramatic oxblood windows and doors.
