The Best Canned Wines

There’s a revolution going on in the wine world. Our love of al fresco dining and socialising on the move has changed the way wineries are selling their produce. The must-have item for your picnic, festival or journey? Wine in a can…

It’s the latest drinking trend to hit the supermarket shelves. From pale summery rosé to organic robust shiraz, most of our preferences are covered. Waitrose, Aldi, Tesco, Ocado, Sainsbury’s and Selfridges are fully on board this trend, with a wide range of prices and grapes on offer. So why a can and why now?
It may have traditionalists muttering in to their cellars, but a new generation of wine drinkers love the packaging. Cans are light, so easy to grab and go, 100% recyclable, quick to chill and practical to transport. Most are 25cl – the size of a large glass – and importantly, they’re well priced. Wine sales in the USA have been booming for some time and the enthusiasm has spread to the UK, with mid-range and good value options jumping on the wagon.

But do they taste any good? Obviously, the contents can’t ‘breathe’ in the way a glass of wine would when poured from a bottle, so oxidization is reduced, but for a fun tipple of the go, this is the new to way quaff.
