The SL Directory: Private Caterers

Whether you’re planning canapés with friends, a dinner party or a birthday celebration, a caterer can help you put on a memorable event without the stress of cooking – and these are the talented chefs we know will go above and beyond to deliver what you need…

Sabrina Tulloch

Sabrina Tulloch is one of London’s pre-eminent private chefs and caterers. Known for creating beautifully presented and interesting dishes which are big on flavour, she’s the go-to name for celebrities and industry insiders. Sabrina can cater intimate dinner parties and canape soirées, as well office lunches and photoshoots. We like the sound of her summer sharing menu, which includes whole roast salmon with citrus salsa verde and watercress mayo; burrata with broad bean hummus, pea shoots and mint; and rose water and pistachio pavlova with fresh berries and cream.

Suzanne James

Suzanne James has been in the business for over 20 years, so she knows what goes into making a great event. You’ll find her name on the catering list at several venues in London, but she also caters private and corporate events from her base in East Dulwich – also home to her pop-up supper club. Choose from set menus or ask the team to create a special menu for your event, whether that’s a canapé reception or dinner party. Sample menus include baked ricotta soufflé with asparagus salad, beef carpaccio with capers and parmesan, and seared scallops with pea purée.

Lottie Brook

If vegetarian and vegan food is what you want, Lottie Brook creates delicious food using seasonal and local produce. Catering parties, dinners and private events in and around London, she carefully sources produce from quality suppliers – including fishmongers and butchers if you’d like non-veg options, too. After learning to cook with her parents in the south of France, she now caters for a wide range of events, including charity supper clubs. Lottie’s sample summer menu includes dishes like smoky baba ganoush with radish and mint, roasted quail with shallots and black grapes, a local cheese selection with homemade chutney, and fig and cinnamon frangipane tart with cream – but you can also choose from canapé selections and smaller bites depending on the nature of your event.

Hope Pointing

Hope Pointing splits her time between Clapham and Dorset. The personal chef and nutritionist has combined her love of food with healthy living and now advocates a holistic approach to nutrition. Dishes are full of veg and gut-friendly ingredients, but the trained chef can also make bespoke dishes if you’d prefer something more indulgent – like her double chocolate cake. Choose from canapés like chicory and feta boats with maple walnuts or hot smoked teriyaki salmon and avocado blinis – or ask Hope to create a bespoke menu for your event. Scroll through her Instagram where you’ll find vibrant dishes like slow-cooked lamb with pomegranate and mint, and an array of summery salads.

Ellie Short

Whether it’s a stylish country wedding or a corporate dinner in the City, London-based catering company Chilli Bees does it all. Founder Ellie Short heads up the team nearly 15 years after starting the small business, having learned to cook from her mother at a young age before shadowing the pros at the Peligoni Club in Greece. Focusing on fresh, seasonal dishes, Ellie specialises in supper clubs and informal dinners – sharing dishes on the menu include the likes of fillet of lamb with pea puree and sharing salads – and delivers inventive canapés, bowl food and desserts, such as deconstructed lemon and strawberry cheesecake with limoncello.

Zara White

Regular readers will know we love Notting Hill-based Zara’s Kitchen – not only for its enviable Instagram feed full of colourful, lovely looking food, but also for Zara’s simple cooking philosophy, which is based around eating seasonally and making the most of natural flavours. Zara learnt to cook during her time in South Africa and now makes simple dishes using seasonal produce. Alongside a small team, she creates tailored menus for intimate canapé and drinks parties, as well as weddings and corporate events. You can also ask the team to create bespoke cocktails and drinks.

Saima Khan

Saima Khan has cooked for clients that range from loyal locals in Hampstead to celebs, politicians and even royalty. Menus are created from diverse cultures where food is best when shared together. Alongside a small group of chefs, her team at The Hampstead Kitchen provides event and party catering for special occasions. Currently, menus are focused on Nordic, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Persian cuisines, but you can ask the team for bespoke menus, whether you need food for a family gathering, cocktail party or wedding. For larger groups, we recommend the sharing platters followed by one or two dessert trays.

Sophie Wright

Sophie Wright launched her business in 2007 and she has since catered events of all sizes – from intimate private dinner parties to events at Buckingham Palace. Trusted to deliver great food and service, Sophie and her team have been the in-house caterer for fashion designer Tom Ford, as well as numerous celebrities, banks and corporate clients, and she loves to find chefs to work in private houses and holiday homes. In between appearing on TV and radio, she leads a team that can produce menus across a range of cuisines from Thai to Italian.
