Food Bites

Want the latest from the world of food? You’re in the right place. From broth cleanses to a canapé delivery service, here’s everything new that’s worth knowing about…

It used to be hard to find convenience food to support your desire to eat healthily. Not anymore: Bellygoodness has developed a range of natural, healthy, gentle-on-the-belly, super-tasty sauces which avoid ingredients that commonly irritate the gut. Not just free from gluten, dairy and sugar, each sauce is completely free from garlic, onions, tomatoes, yeast, nuts, soya and artificial colours and sweeteners. Flavours include Chilli, Mediterranean and White.

Big Mamma Cucina Popolare

This year, Big Mamma Group has already nailed a couple of uber-successful restaurant openings: Gloria, a 70s Capri-style trattoria in Shoreditch; and Circolo Popolare, a Sicilian hotspot in Fitzrovia. Now it’s released some of the most sought-after recipes – giant pizzas al metro to XXL desserts – from the crowd-pleasing menus at both of them.

Made from single-origin raw cacao, Broma chocolate sauce is free from refined sugar and low in calories. Natural ingredients make it a great source of iron, potassium, magnesium and fibre, and it’s also high in antioxidants. What started as the base of a vegan hot chocolate at a foodie market stall on the South Bank is now available for everyone to buy – and use as a brilliant addition to porridge, smoothies, milkshakes and baked items.

Brassica Rooted Spices

Looking to spice up your greens? A collaboration between Guardian columnist Meera Sodha and Tenderstem has produced a blend to boost your broccoli, cauliflower and shaved sprouts, transforming standard side dishes into something spectacular. Simply cut your brassicas into florets or bite-size pieces; toss in a little olive oil; sprinkle over a teaspoon of Brassica Blend and a pinch of salt; then roast at 200ºC for 10 minutes. Or, if you’re stir-frying shaved sprouts, add a dash of Brassica Blend one minute before the end of cooking.

Bloody Drinks

These cocktails in tins are crafted using nothing but proper, high-quality ingredients, then canned for maximum freshness. The signature Bloody Classic has been carefully developed to produce a beautifully balanced, bar-quality cocktail. Its unique recipe includes premium vodka and cream sherry for body; the finest tomatoes from Italy and Spain for natural sweetness; fresh lemons for acidity; and Worcestershire and soy sauces for a rich, umami-packed base.

Week Light by Donna Hay

Donna’s recipes in this book use vegetables in a whole new way. Who knew broccoli could make such a delicious pizza base, flat bread or tart shell? Inside Week Light, you’ll find super-quick, family-friendly, fuss-free meals. Vegetables are at the forefront of nearly every recipe, with a few meat options thrown in, and there are lots of classics reworked to include more goodness. This book is about using food to refuel and re-energise, while nurturing ourselves with flavour.

Bone & Broth

Bone & Broth produces ready-to-eat broths and broth cleanses that come in vegan, beef and chicken flavours. The stock is made by boiling bones on high heat for around two hours, while the broth is simmered on a low heat for up to 36 hours. This ensures maximum extraction of beneficial nutrients like collagen, gelatine, amino acids and glycine, which help curb skin-harming cravings for sugar that destroy collagen and elastin fibres. Use the broths for soups to keep you tip-top for now, then try a cleanse in January.

Sassy by name and nature, this handcrafted rosé cider is gluten-free, 100% natural and made from apples that were organically grown in Château de Sassy’s orchards. It’s also one of the lowest-calorie alcoholic drinks on the market. Versatile and off-dry, it works as well served with sunshine and tomato salads as it does mulled at Christmas. No wonder it’s already found a place on the drinks lists of Sexy Fish, Bob Bob Ricard and Nola.

The Avenue Cookery School – Thai Cooking Class

The Avenue is known for its fun, passionate approach to cooking. Its Thai cooking class is a lively and delicious way to learn all about Thailand’s most popular dishes. It’s held from 7pm to 9.30pm, with dinner and booze included – vegetarian and dietary requirements can be catered for on request. A great last-minute gift for someone – or for yourself, if you need some New Year inspo in the kitchen.

Momo Kombucha

Momo Kombucha is a fermented tea, packed full of naturally occurring probiotics that aid digestion and help maintain balance in the body’s internal ecosystem. This slightly fizzy and refreshing soft drink is low in sugar and naturally contains healthy organic acids as well as the probiotics. It also boasts antioxidants and vitamins that increase energy, support joint health, reduce blood sugar levels and act as a natural detoxifier. Perfect to keep you on track in party season.

Mutiny Mustard

For condiments that pack a punch, these artisanal alcohol-infused mustards are hard to beat. Available in eight different flavours, they are a tangy accompaniment to liven up any meal. Each of Mutiny’s mustards is infused with real alcohol and a honey-base ensures all jars are gluten free. All but the Bloody Mary flavour are suitable for vegetarians.
