Everything You Need To Know About CBD

A key compound found in hemp that boasts many of the plant’s medicinal properties, minus the high, CBD is the ingredient everyone’s talking about. But not all CBD products are created equal. To get answers to some of the most important questions, we went to Gregor Zorn, CBD expert and Chief Scientific Officer at Cannaray. Here’s what he had to say…

Created in partnership with CANNARAY

What is CBD?

“CBD is an acronym for cannabidiol, a safe and naturally occurring compound extracted from the hemp plant,” explains Gregor. “One of the most often asked questions about CBD is “will CBD make me high?” The answer is no, CBD doesn’t cause intoxication, but it has shown positive therapeutic properties, including aiding anxiety, sleep and pain, just to name a few. The intoxication or ‘high’ only happens when THC (another compound found in hemp) is involved, but Cannaray’s CBD is THC-free, meaning the entire range is safe and non-intoxicating.

Is it legal?

"CBD is legal in the UK and most European countries – and is also approved by the World Health Organisation. However, the legality of CBD depends on the country you’re living in,” says Gregor. To be on the safe side, look for a broad-spectrum CBD product, which means the blend will contain plenty of therapeutic terpenes extracted from hemp, but the THC will be taken out. “All of Cannaray’s products contain broad-spectrum, THC-free CBD, giving you a boost of other complementing compounds with no psychotropic effects.

How does it work?

As a completely natural substance – CBD has become something of a secret weapon in the wellness world, with the ability to interact with your body’s built-in endocannabinoid system. This is one of the ways CBD helps promote balance in your body, whether you’re looking to relieve pain or stress, or help with broken sleep.

How do you take it?

There are a few things to consider when taking CBD, says Gregor, namely the type of product and the dosage. CBD can be taken orally via an oil or capsule or applied topically using a cream or balm. “CBD oil is the most popular way to take CBD,” says Gregor. “Cannaray’s  CBD Oral Drops come with a clever measured dropper, so you know exactly how much you’re taking.” Start by taking one full dropper of the oil underneath your tongue (which helps the CBD get into your bloodstream) and holding it for 90 seconds until fully absorbed before swallowing. “If you’re a CBD beginner, you may also want to consider taking CBD capsules. Both Cannaray’s  CBD Capsules and CBD Curcumin Capsules offer balanced, subtle effects and an easy-to-measure dosage. Our CBD Capsules harness VESIsorb® patented technology, a Swiss technology that increases the amount of CBD absorbed by the body by five times versus regular capsules.”

CBD is something of a SECRET WEAPON in the wellness world, with the ability to interact with your body’s BUILT-IN ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM.

What strength should you take?

“CBD is processed differently based on genetics and lifestyle, so it’s important that you personalise your dosage based on how you respond as an individual,” Gregor recommends. “If you’re a beginner, start with a low application – one capsule a day, or one full dropper (1ml) of CBD oil – and build up gradually, finding a level that works for you, and remember there’s no one-size-fits all approach. The ‘right’ amount of CBD is the one that gives you the desired effect. Once you feel that improved state, stop there, because you’ve reached your perfect dosage.”

What about CBD balms?

While ingestibles work inside the body, CBD topicals work directly on the area they’re applied, making them ideal for sore and achy muscles. “Try massaging Cannaray’s CBD Muscle Balm into tight muscles for ten to 15 minutes to allow the CBD to penetrate deeper into the skin,” says Gregor. The formula is also infused with nourishing eucalyptus, arnica and aloe.

When should you take it?

There’s no right or wrong time to take CBD but using it at certain moments throughout the day can boost your mood in different ways. For example, taking CBD in the morning can give you a gentle buzz – like caffeine but without the jitters – while taking it at stressful moments throughout the day will allow you to be in control of your self-care. CBD is also perfect to use in the evening – try taking either an oil or capsule one hour before bed to give your mind the chance to unwind.

How long does it take to work?

Oral drops will get to work the quickest, taking between 15 to 20 minutes to reach their desired effect. Plus, the results will last between three to six hours. CBD capsules and topical products, on the other hand, take between 15-60 minutes to feel the effects.

Where should you start?

Cannaray offers CBD Oral Drops in three varying strengths, and the 300mg option is the perfect product for first timers. If you aren’t keen on taking CBD on its own, you can also add the drops to your morning smoothie or coffee for a stress-busting start to the day. Cannaray’s CBD Muscle Balm is also our go-to for post-workout recovery, with 250mg of CBD packed into every pot. Whichever product you choose, rest assured all Cannaray CBD is the gold standard – each and every product is triple lab tested and free from sulphates, GMOs, dairy, artificial colours or dyes.
