The SL Directory: One-To-One Yoga Instructors

Among all the forms of yoga on offer, finding the right one to deliver the results you want can take time. We’ve got a short cut for you: from stress and recovery specialists to flexibility gurus, here are nine instructors that come highly recommended.

Cat Meffan

The founder of Soul Sanctuary, Cat is proof yoga can heal both body and mind. A former dancer and gymnast, Cat snapped her ACL when she was 17, leading to a knee reconstruction and then a diagnosis of a rare syndrome that could see her wheelchair-bound by the age of 30. When she was 21, she booked into her first yoga class, and she hasn’t looked back. Today, Cat focuses on the mental as much as the physical. Her classes are challenging and designed to cultivate awareness, alignment and mobility in the body, all from a place of balance and non-judgement. And if you’re feeling the need to slow down, Cat will recognise that too – her yin sessions are some of the best out there.

Charlotte Townend

Charlotte, the founder of Wylder Retreats, believes yoga is the antidote to many modern ills, including stress, anxiety and insomnia. Her practice is dynamic, with varying styles included – from traditional vinyasa to restorative sessions – albeit more focused on self-awareness than calorie-burning. Each of her sessions finishes with a head, neck and shoulder massage. Charlotte is so convinced of the restorative powers of yoga that she takes progress pictures throughout your journey – you too can expect longer, leaner limbs, better posture and improved mobility. Classes are available online via Zoom or face to face – she currently splits her time between London and Ibiza.

Nahid de Belgeonne

Most of us live in a constant state of ‘fight or flight’, which can wreak havoc with long-term health. Nahid, who heads up The Human Method, can help you reset body and mind. Her classes are a combination of physical movement and breathwork designed to rebalance the nervous system, regenerate the body and change the way you look at movement. If fast-paced vinyasa classes aren’t for you and you’re struggling with stress, anxiety, an injury or sleep problems, Nahid’s brain-to-body approach won’t disappoint.

Hannah Rushforth

Having discovered yoga after struggling with burnout, Hannah will help you flow with both strength and flexibility while also increasing focus, breath control and stability. If you’re a beginner, Hannah will teach you the fundamentals – the names of the postures, alignment, modifications and breathwork – while even seasoned yogis will be challenged by her unique approach that fuses energising vinyasa with yin yoga for a full-body release. Classes are available in person or via Zoom if you don’t live in London.

Chris Magee

Martial artist and PT Chris discovered yoga when he was looking for ways to heal his sports injuries. Nearly 1,000 hours of training later – including hatha, vinyasa, rocket and acro-yoga – he’s now on a mission to bring the benefits of yoga to everyone. His classes are fun but challenging, and are tailored to your needs. If you’re just starting out, Chris will help you master the basics so you can enter a class setting with confidence, while more experienced yogis can use one-to-one time to refine their practice and build the technique and strength to master trickier, skill-based postures.

Claire Missingham

Claire started teaching yoga 23 years ago. In that time she’s become one of the UK’s most-loved yoga teachers, and continues to train highly skilled, unique and deep-thinking teachers in the field. Known for her spiritual yet down-to-earth approach, and for incorporating music into her alignment-focused classes, she’s the name to know for real results. Regardless of where you are in your yoga journey, a session with Claire will give you the opportunity to learn more about yogic philosophy, breathwork, meditation and, ultimately, yourself.

Nadia Narain

Nadia’s upbringing in Hong Kong cultivated an early affinity for a holistic eastern philosophy. Recognised as one of Europe’s leading yogis (her clients include Reese Witherspoon and Kate Moss), she has been teaching since 1996, helping everyone from athletes to expectant mums to build strength, flexibility and inner peace. Over time, you’ll feel less stressed, more balanced, and mentally lighter. In your sessions, focus on yoga, meditation or breathwork, or all three, or use the time for a wellness and lifestyle consultation. Be sure to book ahead with plenty of time – Nadia splits her time between LA and London and is only in London for part of the year.

Sanchia Legister

London-born Sanchia’s dynamic, hip hop beat-driven classes are known for their good vibes and welcoming atmosphere. With an emphasis on self-care and feel-good flows, Sanchia will help you stretch out, free the mind and leave you feeling calm and content. As well as being one of the head instructors at Psycle and a lululemon ambassador, Sanchia heads up Yogahood, an organisation seeking to make yoga culture more inclusive and less intimidating. Get in touch with Sanchia directly for booking enquiries.

Sarah Highfield

Having trained in ashtanga, hatha, vinyasa flow, yin, restorative and yoga nidra, and worked at the likes of Bodyism and Form Studios, Sarah now teaches her own unique style of yoga. Whether you’re looking to strengthen the body, increase flexibility, settle the mind or simply take time out for yourself, Sarah will create a class designed for your goals. The ultimate in convenience, Sarah will come to your home if you’re based in central London – she mainly teaches in and around St John’s Wood, Marylebone, Hampstead, Mayfair and Knightsbridge – but offers sessions on Zoom, too.
