The Supplements These 3 Nutritionists Actually Take
Emily English
“I know I’m biased because I made it but Epetōme Synbiotic is genuinely my non-negotiable. I take it every day to support gut health and digestion, as well as the wider benefits this can have for things like immunity, skin and hormones. To support my skin further, I take astaxanthin, a carotenoid that accumulates in the skin and provides antioxidant protection. For sleep, I swear by 5-HTP. I take it before bed and genuinely notice a difference in my sleep quality. Finally, through the winter, when we’re all getting much less sunlight, I see vitamin D as essential. I like taking it in a liposomal format because it’s fat-soluble and this format is designed to optimise absorption."

“I take omega-3 for skin, brain and heart health, as well as to support a healthy inflammatory response. I also like knowing exactly how much EPA and DHA – the main omega-3 fats found in fish oil – I’m getting. The amounts in fish can vary depending on the species, what they eat and how they’re raised, which is why I choose Bare Biology. Each batch is also independently tested for purity. I also take the brand’s vitamin D for bone health and immune function. In the UK, we don’t get enough vitamin D between October and early March and it can be difficult to get enough from food alone. In fact, the NHS advises everyone to consider taking a daily 10mcg supplement during autumn and winter. For sleep and muscle tension, I take magnesium glycinate, which also supports normal muscle and nervous system function and helps maintain healthy bones. We tend to think about calcium when it comes to bone health, but magnesium deserves attention too. Finally, I take a multivitamin to help fill any nutritional gaps alongside a varied diet.”

“Omega-3 is an essential fat, meaning we need to get it through our diet, so it’s something I’m conscious of including regularly. I don’t eat oily fish every day, so a good-quality omega-3 supplement is an easy way to keep my intake of EPA and DHA consistent. These fats have important roles throughout the body, with particularly well-established links to heart and brain health.
To support my strength and training, I take creatine every day but I’m also interested in the growing research around cognition and healthy ageing. It’s one of the supplements I find particularly interesting as we get older, especially for women. Electrolytes are another must for me, particularly after the sauna and when I’m travelling. This one provides sodium alongside smaller amounts of magnesium, potassium and calcium, and I like that it doesn’t contain extra sweeteners and comes in little sachets I can throw in my bag. Then there’s vitamin D. For several reasons, from living in London to knowing I’m genetically predisposed to less efficient vitamin D conversion, supplementing it is important for me. I like the spray format because I can easily adjust the dose, and this one is small enough to travel with.”
