What’s In Jenn’s Wellness Toolkit

Right now, it’s also our beauty director Jenn’s job to know what’s in, what’s out and what’s worthwhile in wellness. But does she actually practise what she preaches? Here’s a rundown of the products, places and people she turns to to stay as ‘well’ as possible…

I have a love-hate relationship with ‘wellness’ – mainly because consistency isn’t my strong suit and I really like to prioritise fun, which often involves indulging in things that aren’t necessarily good for me. But I do take care of myself, inside and out, and certainly pay more attention since turning 40 earlier this year.

Pilates is the one form of exercise I’ve stuck with. I have Heartcore to thank for that. The classes are dynamic, varied and so tough – you see a true transformation if you’re consistent. Recently, I’ve been doing a lot more mat Pilates at home, following Bryony Deery’s videos. I’ve even started travelling with a Pilates ring – it’s light, effective and versatile.

I’m trying to run more for my bone health. I’ve never been good at it or felt that ‘runners high’ but I’ve read a lot about how important impact training is to keep your bones strong and healthy. I’m trying to go at least once a week, running between 4km-5km each time. Investing in some good kit helps: get some proper running trainers (mine are Nike) and I recommend Asics shorts because they don’t bunch up or chafe.

I probably own six pairs of the same leggings – the lululemon Aligns. High rise with a seamless waistband, they don’t dig in and are made from the softest fabric. I’ve not found anything better. I wear them for flights too. They’re so comfortable and last forever.

My favourite weekly activity is tennis. I’ve played since I was nine and – despite really needing some technique coaching – love playing with my husband once or twice a week after work. The phone’s away, the blood is pumping and my competitiveness is well and truly engaged. I also have some great tennis pieces from lululemon, Alo and Vuori.

My digestion has always been an issue – specifically, and very unsexily, chronic constipation. I’ve had multiple tests, cameras where you don’t want them going, varying diets and nothing seems to be able to fix it but a few things help. Probiotics – specifically Symprove – move things along, as does a fibre supplement. I also get a colonic twice a year and do an epsom salt cleanse once a month which is not for the faint hearted: two heaped teaspoons of food grade salt dissolved in hot water, swallowed down (if you manage not to gag) and then you don’t want to be far from a bathroom for the day. It’s intense but really resets things.

I’m very picky when it comes to supplements – partly because I have a health issue which means I can’t take any vitamin C (so many supplements are full of it) and partly because I don’t think it’s necessary if your nutrition is good. I have regular blood tests which give a good picture of my levels and luckily, I’m not lacking in many areas. I take marine collagen (for bone and joint health, although I do think I’ve seen a difference in my skin too); creatine for strength and brain health; and magnesium for digestion, headaches and sleep. I really rate Artah and trust what Rhian Stephenson, the owner, releases because she puts so much research into it. I’ve recently introduced a multi-mushroom gummy for mental clarity, better energy and stronger immunity.

I love a hardcore, week-long detox retreat. I like having all temptations removed so I can really reset my body, gut and mind. I’ve tried many in the name of research and favourites include Mayr Life and Original FX Mayr in Austria, SHA in Mexico and Lanserhof in Germany. There are varying degrees of restriction at each but I like it to be tough so I can get the best results.

Four years ago, I gave up caffeine. I honestly haven’t missed it and it’s saved me a lot of money. I now drink lots of herbal tea – mostly rooibos but also a caffeine-free chai alternative called Bengal Spice. Very occasionally, I get a decaf coffee but it’s mainly for the ritual.

There are some treatments and therapies I try to do regularly. I love a lymphatic drainage massage, not for the waist-shrinking benefits (which does happen immediately but is often oversold) but to help shift toxins in the body. My go-to practitioners are Rebecca Trevalinet for a soothing, detailed treatment or Olivia Johnson, who uses a Brazilian technique that’s a little more rigorous. Acupuncture has been a revelation for my mental wellbeing – if you can get an appointment with Ross J. Barr he’s pure magic. I do think a facial can be a form of therapy too, especially when you’re in the hands of people like Katherine Mackenzie Paterson, Katie England or Ada Ooi.

At home, I do a few wellness rituals and there are some gadgets I rate. One thing I do every night however is raise my legs up against the wall or headboard for ten minutes. It helps hugely to reduce cortisol, swelling and the chance of getting varicose veins. When I remember, I dry brush before my morning shower to boost my lymph system and I’ll pop some LED therapy on aching joints to help ease inflammation.

A hiking holiday is my dream trip. I’ve done the Atlas mountains in Morocco, the Apennine in Italy – even my honeymoon involved hiking, horse riding and fishing in Patagonia. My most recent trip was to the Dolomites. I stayed at Hotel Hubertus near the Italian-Austrian border, which is surrounded by incredibly scenic trails and has the most amazing spa facilities to rest and recover in.

My diet is… haphazard. I’ve tried every fad – 5:2, Atkins, detox lemonade – but am trying more and more to just not overindulge or eat as much as my 6ft 4 husband! I avoid having too much wheat and dairy as I have mild intolerances to both but I’ve never denied myself to the point of misery. Life’s too short; eat the pizza.

Sleep is a huge priority for me. I pride myself on being ‘good at it’ – according to my Oura ring, I’m an overachiever. If I ever struggle to nod off, a few drops of Dreem Distillery's CBD oil in an evening bath makes a huge difference, as does the This Works pillow spray and a chamomile tea. My biggest tip would be to sleep with your phone outside of the room. A £10 alarm clock from Amazon wakes me up just as well without the distraction.
