Hot Hotel Openings 2019

Daydreaming about this year’s summer holiday already? From Sri Lanka to Chicago, these are our favourite 14 openings of 2019. Not planning on going abroad this year? Don’t worry – we’ve also included six UK properties you’ll want to pay a visit too.

Calili, Greece

When it launches this summer, Calilo will be an elegant five-star property located on the island of Ios, complete with 1,000-acres of land and six miles of coastline. Right between popular hotspots Mykonos and Santorini, the resort aims to offer its guests a luxury stay: the vast private retreat offers plenty of places to swim, do water sports, walk along one of the numerous seaside or island trails scattered throughout the property, or just take in the views and relax in one of the many cabanas or natural baths overlooking the Mediterranean. Alongside high-end suites, expect four restaurants and a range of bars.

Grank Park Hotel Rovinj, Croatia

With views over Rovinj old town, nearby islands and the sea, this forthcoming Croatian hotel offers a new hotspot to enjoy the country’s increasing popularity. Within, the hotel will have 209 luxurious rooms and suites, many of which will have views over the yachts and boats harboured in the town’s new marina. As well as neighbouring Mulini beach, guests will be able to take part in numerous up-to-date wellness programmes at the on-site spa. When it comes to dining, we like the sound of the Cap Aureo restaurant. Located on the hotel’s fifth floor, the eatery will have a terrace overlooking the marina, an open kitchen and a chef’s table.

Grantley Hall, Yorkshire Dales

Grantley Hall, in the Yorkshire Dales, is currently undergoing a huge refurbishment project. Set within acres of parkland and manicured gardens, once open we envisage this being the ultimate weekend getaway (or wedding venue, for that matter). Whether located in the restored Old Hall or the newly built Fountains Wing, each spacious bedroom will feature a large seating area and views over the grounds or River Skell. All marble bathrooms will contain free-standing baths and walk-in showers so visitors can enjoy a relaxing soak or an invigorating shower (with luxury amenities). The on-site spa is dedicated to restoring beauty and balance through personalised treatments. Guests can relax next to the 18m indoor swimming pool, take a dip in the indoor-to-outdoor hydrotherapy pool or enjoy the thermal experiences available in the sauna, steam room and snow room. Harding Boutique Hotel, Sri Lanka

The first Harding Boutique Hotel – a new venture by Sri Lankan-Australian entrepreneur Paul Harding – will open in Ahangama in late 2019. Designed by British architect Jonathan Ashmore, the project will channel the look of the country’s Tropical Modernism movement pioneered by Geoffrey Bawa. Comprising just six suites, each will feature a private balcony with vistas over the Indian Ocean, as well as a sea-facing private bath, rain shower and king-size bed with Egyptian cotton linens. Suites will be elevated among natural coconut groves to connect the property to its lush surroundings, and the site is close to both a number of famous surf breaks and the Unesco World Heritage site Galle Fort.

The Pig at Bridge Place, Canterbury

The SL team is most excited by the prospect of not one but three new destinations from The Pig. First up is The Pig at Bridge Place, which is set to open in May. Formerly Bridge Place Country Club, this new property is a restored 17th-century manor house just outside the historic village of Bridge, three miles south of Canterbury. Details are being kept under wraps, but we do know that, like its other destinations, the kitchen garden and restaurant will provide the beating heart of the hotel: anything that can’t be supplied by the gardens will be sourced from the best producers within a 25-mile radius. Further in the future are two more additions: The Pig Harlyn Bay near Padstow in Cornwall (due to open in autumn/winter 2019) and The South Downs Pig near Arundel, East Sussex, in 2020.

Six Senses Bhutan, South Asia

This is not one, not two, but five new Six Senses resorts, spread across Bhutan. And with only 82 suites across all five sites, that experience should be high on the list for anyone looking for a real escape. Each of the lodges offers something different: in the capital city of Thimphu there’s a focus on the modern, while in Punakha the accommodation is modelled on a traditional farmhouse. The Gangtey chalet will have a bird-watching bridge, Bamthang offers a forest-within-a-forest, and fifth stop Paro has been designed with its nearby old stone ruins in mind. Guests will be able to move between each of the lodges to get a varied experience of Bhutan.

The Standard, London

With hotels in Hollywood, Downtown LA, NYC and Miami, The Standard’s forthcoming King’s Cross launch marks the first international opening for this super-cool hotel group. Taking over the historic Camden Town Annex just across the street from St Pancras Station, the ultra-modern hotel has added three brand-new floors on top of the existing building. While details on the hotel are scarce, we do know that the hotel will celebrate the building's history and neighbourhood throughout its 266 bedrooms, and there’ll be culinary offerings from chefs Adam Rawson (former head chef of Peruvian restaurant Pachamama and previous winner of Chef of the Year at the Young British Foodie Awards) and Peter Sanchez-Iglesias (head chef of Bristol’s Michelin-starred Casamia and Paco Tapas). We can’t wait to hear more.

The Dixon, London

You’d never guess that this stylish newcomer was part of the Marriott group. Part of its Autograph Collection, The Dixon (nothing to do with interiors guru Tom) is set to open in the former London Bridge Magistrates’ Courts and police station this spring, having been pushed back a few times over the last year. Named after the 1906 building’s architect John Dixon Butler, the 193-bedroom hotel’s design is set to stay true to its history: its sweeping statement staircase in the lobby and the wood panelling in the old court chambers will remain, but will be brought bang up to date with smatterings of modern art and statement lighting.

This new property will offer three distinct dining destinations. With kitchens overseen by executive chef Chris Golding (who previously worked at Nobu, Zuma and Dinings at the Norman Hotel, Tel Aviv) guests will be able to discover Asian-inspired sharing plates at Vintry Kitchen, modern British cooking at Mercer Roof Terrace and covert cocktails paired with New York-inspired bites at Do Not Disturb (DND).
