The Beauty Insider: Summer’s Hottest Make-Up Colours

Every fortnight, make-up artist Lisa Potter-Dixon shares her tips and tricks on what’s new, what’s cult and what you really need to know in the world of beauty. Right now, she’s talking about celebrating summer using pops of colour.

The sun is out, the beer gardens are in full swing and the shops are packed with flowing florals. This can only mean one thing, summer is here.

This time of year is the perfect time to add a pop of colour to your makeup look. Now I’m not saying that you have to match your eyeliner to your Aperol although, I’m not going to lie, I’ve done that! But changing up your nude lip to a peach, or your black liner to a royal blue, can enhance your look instantly.

And buying a bright lippy doesn’t mean you have to wear it to its full intensity. The same goes for eyeshadows. There are multiple ways to add a subtle touch of colour. Here are a few of my favourites.

Lips

Pat it

You don’t always have to apply your lipstick straight from the bullet. Patting it on the lips with your finger gives a soft, hint of colour. Start in the centre and spread the colour out.

Blur it

If, like me, you’re not really a lip liner kinda girl, try gently blurring out the lipstick line with a cotton bud. Creating this soft edge means you are less likely to have to worry about your lipstick bleeding throughout the day.

Rock it

Of course, wearing a full on lip is an instant mood-booster. There’s nothing better to brighten your complexion and your smile. So don’t be afraid to go bold.

My go-to summer lipsticks:

Lisa Eldridge rainbow spill

The name says it all, this lipstick brings pure joy to whoever wears it. Its velvety finish makes it perfect for the above techniques.

Kiko Ocean feel lipstick

These babies are super hydrating and come in an array of shades. My faves being 'Coral inside’ and ‘Could be rose’. Wearable whatever the weather.

The Body Shop lip and cheek stains

This dual-purpose liquid stain is perfect if you just want a little something, something on the lips. Build it to be as subtle or as strong as your heart desires.

Eyes

I love being playful with eye makeup. Right now there are so many amazing shades out there. Here are some fun ways to wear them.

Line it

A coloured liner is a brilliant way to experiment. Drawing a thin line along the lash line really brightens your eyes. If you don’t have a steady hand, rest your elbow on a table, dot along the lash line, and then join the dots. This technique is a sure fire winner.

Smoke it

The classic smokey eye doesn’t have to be classic at all. Try blending your favourite bright shadow under the lower lash line to create an under smoke. This is subtler that a full on smoke, but still adds that pop of colour. This works great with jewel-toned shadows.

Lash it

Coloured mascaras may seem like a blast from the past, but they are back with a vengeance. I love pairing this with a nude eye and dewy skin. If you’re a die-hard black mascara wearer, apply that first and then add a coloured version on the tips of the lashes. This looks beautiful when the sun hits your face.

My top choices:

Estee Lauder x Duro day eye shadow palette

This palette is gorgeous. It has your classic every day nudes, plus a couple of beautiful pastel tones for when you want to change it up.

Fenty Baeside vivid liner

These liquid liners are beauties. The bright pastel tones are playful yet wearable.

Benefit BADgal Bang! mascara in blue

This cobalt blue mascara makes the whites of your eyes look brighter instantly as well as giving you the ultimate statement lash.

All I have left to say is go for it! Give a pop of colour a go and see how it makes you feel.

Love & lipstick,

Lisa xx
