6 Reasons You Should Use An Electric Toothbrush, If You Don’t Already

There’s a lot of talk over why you should use an electric toothbrush rather than a manual one. Do they really make such a difference to your dental health? We spoke to leading celebrity dentist Dr Richard Marques to find out how and why you should be adding power to your regular brushing routine…

1. They Take Away The Hard Work

Ultimately, the debate between manual and electric will always come down to personal preference, but in my opinion, electric toothbrushes are so much more effective, namely because they take a lot of the work and worry out of your hands. Many modern models have variable functions so you can now control the speed and intensity to suit your needs thanks to in-built sensors and timers, so you’re never going overboard.

2. They Remove Significantly More Plaque

Other than price point, one of the core differences between manual and electric is the sonic technology electric brushes use – the oscillation of the heads (which, put simply, means a regular rhythm of movement). They have the ability and are proven to remove much more plaque than manual brushes, so there’s no doubt about it, you’ll definitely notice and feel the difference after making the switch, as will your dentist at your next check-up. It goes without saying that this considerable reduction in plaque will also lead to reduced gum inflammation and risk of disease or infection, so it’s a win-win all round.

3. Most Are Gentler On Your Gums Than Manual Ones

If used properly, electric toothbrushes are very gentle on the gums. This is because their set-up has been designed to help maintain a constant pressure, which means you physically can’t overdo it or harm the gums by brushing too hard. The key to getting the movement right with an electric is by allowing the brush to sit on the tooth for ten or so seconds before slowly moving it across to the next one. You don’t need to vigorously scrub with it or move it around frantically, you just need to move it along and across your teeth and gums gently.

4. A Whiter Smile Is Almost Guaranteed

While you shouldn’t expect a really white, bleached smile, you will notice a brighter one within weeks of use, thanks to the speedier and more effective removal of plaque. Plus, you can now pick brushes with multiple settings specifically designed for what you need to concentrate more on. So, for example, if whitening is an issue you want to address, many now come with that option or setting as a focus. This is also true of the different types of heads. Rubber sections in the middle of some designs help more with stain removal, while others have softer bristles which should be sought after for those with sensitive teeth.

5. It’s Easy To Know If You’re Brushing Too Hard

If the bristles on your toothbrush head are becoming frayed easily, it’s a sure sign you’re brushing too aggressively and need to pare it back. As a general rule, try and swap your toothbrush heads every three months, but anything before that shouldn’t be needed. As well, make a point of storing your brush upright and away from sinks and toilets too – it’ll prevent air born bacteria from settling on the head.

6. They’ll Last You A Very Long Time

While electric brushes seem like quite the investment, they are set to last you for at least five years, if not more. The only regular commitment they require is the changing of heads, as said before. Most come with year warranty’s now too, so all repair costs and return shipping will be covered, providing the product is still under its warranty.
