The Gloss-Giver

No.7 Bonding Oil, £28 | Olaplex

“I swear by Olaplex, but especially the No7 Bonding Oil. It’s the product I use to create shine and a luxe, glossy finish. I use it to create ‘liquid hair’ too and have my own blend I use on everyone – no matter the hair type. I start with the No9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum and then layer the oil on top, so the former sits underneath and acts like a shield. I usually stick to a ratio of 2:1 but, depending on the hair type, you can use more or less. Finer hair requires less of the No9, while thicker, drier hair requires a little more. This duo will always give your hair a luxurious texture and look.”

The Niche Tools

Curl Shine Styler Super G Series Brush, £44.94 | YS Park

“Along with my Mason Pearson brush, I love the ones by YS Park. The round brushes and combs are so sturdy and I always bring back a selection from Paris. I also love the teasing brush. It’s long and thin, and is brilliant for creating static-free backcombing for extra volume at the root. It also keeps flyaways in check and is ideal for pushing back wayward hairs that sit around your face.”

The £4.50 Staple

got2b Glued 4 Brows & Edges Gel, £4.50 (was £5.50) | Schwarzkopf

“This is one of my favourite affordable products. It used to be a secret among stylists, but everyone has caught on now. I use it to slick hair back into buns, ponytails or sleek updos, but also to seal strands down when I want a shiny, glossy effect. I still can’t believe how affordable it is given how integral it is to my – and many other stylists’ – kit.”

The Cult Classic

Boar Bristle Hairbrush, £203.90 | Mason Pearson

“My collection of brushes and combs reflects my 20 years in the industry. The one I turn to most regularly, however, is my Mason Pearson Boar Bristle brush. It works on every hair type to smooth, detangle and whip hair into shape when time is of the essence. It’s gentle and never snags – there’s a reason it wins endless awards and has stood the test of time. It’s well worth the investment in my opinion.”

The Hair Jewels To Note

Lelet NY & Epona Valley Accessories

“For pretty accessories, I like two brands – Lelet NY and Epona Valley. The pieces are hand crafted, and you can also design custom accessories – which is worth knowing ahead of big events. Both have created one-off pieces for the Met Gala for me. I used a bun cage on Nicola Coughlan by Epona Valley and then some custom leather flowers by Lelet at the 2023 Met Gala. I also am always on the hunt for Bakelite accessories. They have a certain vintage quality to them.”

The Versatile Straightener

Chronos Hair Straightener, £289 | GHD

“Right now, I am only using ghd tools – I just find they are the most reliable, which is important for me. The tech is world class and each tool has consistent heat settings, which mean the damage risk is low. My favourite tool is the Chronos Styler. I use it to make hair straight, wavy, kinky – you name it, it’s so versatile. A simple technique with the Chronos is to use it on a low heat to create a glossy, elevated look. You can work it through the hair gradually from root to tip and you’ll find the heat closes the cuticles, giving the ends a glossy, shiny finish, rather than leaving them looking raggedy and lacklustre.”

The Old-School Essential

XL Thermal Rollers, £11.25 (were £15) | Kitsch

“Traditional velcro rollers are so underestimated. I always have some with me. They’ve taken a bit of a battering from a PR perspective over the years, but in my opinion, they still deliver unbeatable volume – I love these ones by Kitsch. I recommend using them on dry or damp hair, then blasting them with the heat from a dryer to create hold and bounce from the root. Once I’ve taken them out, I like to brush the waves out for a softer finish and pin them back with a classic barrette clip – nothing looks more timeless.”

The Volume-Booster

No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo, £28 | Olaplex

“I always use this dry shampoo as it soaks up grease, but it also creates great texture and bounce. I tend to spray it about two fingers’ width down the hair, pinching it in to create a bit of grit and added definition. Applying dry shampoo this way means you get all the volume and lift, but you still have a smooth parting that hasn’t been interfered with. In my opinion, too much lift at the root with this type of product can look unnatural.”

The Versatile Mist

Quick Dry Hairspray, £23.80 | Redken

“You can’t beat this affordable hairspray. I finish most of the looks I create with it. It’s fast drying and controls hair while boosting shine. But it’s never sticky or thick. It has a surprisingly lightweight texture that is easy to brush out. It can also be used to style hair – mist it all over before pinching and twisting strands for a crumped, cool-girl effect. You get that lived-in effect without spending hours using tongs.”
