Meet The No.1 Professional Hair Styling Brand In The World

Few names have been in the haircare game for as long as Paul Mitchell. Synonymous with high-quality, professional-grade products, it’s remained a trusted favourite for hairstylists and consumers alike. But what sets the brand apart? To find out, we flew to Frankfurt to sit down with two leading hair experts, Jason Yates, President of John Paul Mitchell Systems and Paula Peralta, Artistic Director at Paul Mitchell to discuss everything from the brand’s heritage to its award winning products.

Created in partnership with Paul Mitchell

THE PRODUCTS & THE RANGES

A Bestseller Everyone Loves? Super Skinny Serum is such a fan favourite. It’s really unique because it both reduces drying time and gives you insane humidity resistance too. So, whether you want super polished hair or have naturally frizzy strands that need taming, it’s perfect.” – Paula Peralta, artistic director for Paul Mitchell

Your Favourite Range? “We have so many, from the namesake Paul Mitchell, to Tea Tree Lavender & Mint and even Mitch – our men's grooming line. But the Awapuhi Wild Ginger line is definitely one of my favourites to use both at home and on our clients. It’s our luxury line and all the products are formulated with HydraTriplex, hyaluronic acid and vegan collagen. It’s all about getting softer, shinier, silkier-looking hair. From our thick and foamy Hydrocream Whip to our blow-out spray and oils, there’s so much to play with.” – Paula

Is There standout From The Awapuhi Range? “The HydraTriplex Treatment used to be something that was only used at the basin in salons but we’ve since created a version that can be used at home. It’s a game changer. Ideal if you suffer with damage or dryness, it hydrates, binds and seals the hair with moisturising ingredients. I always tell people that, when you buy a new car, you buy insurance – to protect your investment. With these at-home treatments, you’re doing the same thing – post hair-colouring or after you’ve had it chopped or styled.” – Paula

THE BRAND & THE BUSINESS

We’re different because our innovation was born behind the chair. It’s by talking with clients over the years, discovering what they want and working directly with our hairstylists when formulating products, that our customers have always felt seen and heard. It’s what's kept us ahead of the trends, rather than just following them. – Jason Yates, Paul Mitchell president

We’ve remained the number one hair care brand in the world for a reason. Alongside our ethos and what we believe in, it's all about the reliability of the products. As a hairdresser behind the chair, the product really does perform – so I’ve always felt really confident recommending it to my clients no matter their hair texture, type or concern. – Paula

Paul Mitchell has always been steered by people and the planet – as well as a huge focus on sustainability. It’s been our driving force from the start. From our packaging to the way we interact and work with both consumers and hairdressers, nothing has changed. We want every process and facet of the business to leave the planet better than we found it. – Paula

We have been cruelty-free since the company began in 1980. The only thing that’s changed now is we’re doing it better, and we’re talking about it – since customers want more transparency. That’s the thing with sustainability, we have to continually evolve and improve.– Jason

Back in the 80s, we established a biodynamic, self-sustaining farm in Hawaii. It was one of the first of its kind. This is where our hero ingredient – Awapuhi ginger – is sourced and we’ve created an entire range around it. Native Hawaiians have used its fragrant juice for centuries. It’s enriched with 19 amino acids that makes the hair look and feel its best – plus it also provides natural nourishment for dry and damaged strands. – Paula

What Products Are Best For Colour-Treated Hair? The Awapuhi Wild Ginger line is completely colour-safe and within our other ranges, we have dedicated products to target colour-treated hair too. For example, within our Tea Tree range, there’s a Tea Tree Special Colour Shampoo and Conditioner, which gives you the range’s classic spa-like comfort and tea tree tingle, but it also has added colour care benefits.”

Tell Us About An Unsung Hero? “Definitely Freeze & Shine. It’s one of our oldest products, so perhaps it has gotten a little less hype lately – but it’s so good. I have a lot of clients in LA who are musicians and need hair that’s going to last on stage. This means great prep – so this product is one I often reach for. It’s a finishing spray, but a hack is to use it pre-blow dry to really get that perfect hold and shine.” – Paula

Do You Have A Hero Product For Curly & Textured Hair? “All our ranges contain products for curly or textured hair, which is something we’re super proud of. On my clients, I love using the Tea Tree Lavender Mint range for its ultra-hydrating properties. Traditionally, curly and textured hair suffers from dryness, so this is great for keeping things nourished. I also love our defining gel, which helps curls look fresh and sculpted.” – Paula

What’s One Product That Does It All? “The Foaming Pommade is great for multi-use. You can use it for polishing and getting rid of that fluffy feeling on the ends of your hair, or to keep flyaways at bay. Alternatively, use it to create a really sleek slicked-back bun.” – Paula

A Recommendation For Damaged Hair Needing Extra TLC? “For intense repair, definitely try our BondRX range. It’s a professional treatment that can be applied in-salon – plus there are also shampoo and conditioners for at-home use. It’s the best thing for re-building bonds and fortifying hair in need of a refresh. There are a couple steps your stylist can take, but essentially, you’ll be left with glossier, shiner, healthier strands.” – Paula

What Oils Should We Try? “The Tea Tree Lavender mint nourishing oil
is one of our favourites. Not only does it give you that shine and softness, but it also delivers on scent. It's incredible because it’s water based, so it soaks in seamlessly without weighing down the hair or sitting on top of it.” – Paula

Any Saviours For Greasy Hair? “The Kombucha Rinse is perfect for this. It’s part of our Tea Tree range and features Apple Cider Vinegar, which is great for detoxing the scalp. It tackles the build-up, since it's a pre-shampoo treatment. Just wet your hair, pop it on and it’ll both smooth the cuticle and refresh the scalp. As we all know – healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, so keeping it clean is important.” – Paula

A New Exciting Launch To Know? “We’ve got our demi-glosses coming very soon. They come in a range of shades, and you can actually mix and match to customise them to exactly what you’re looking for. It’s the perfect at-home treatment to keep salon results looking fresh. To use it, start with damp, clean hair. Work it through, then let it sit for three minutes before rinsing. Along with a great pigment, you also get incredible softness and shine.” – Jason
