Hollywood Make-up Artist Jillian Dempsey Shares Her Beauty Rules

Regularly painting the faces of A-listers like Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart and Kate Winslet, what Jillian Dempsey doesn’t know about red carpet beauty isn’t worth knowing. We spoke to her about her top tricks – don’t get ready this party season without them…

Always Hydrate

To get the skin looking fresh and ready for make-up, I sculpt and massage the face using a genius Japanese micro-vibration massage tool (launching next year). I will also apply an eye mask to reduce puffiness, fade dark circles and hydrate and brighten the whole eye area; I always use the Chantecaille Energising Eye Recovery Mask. I then apply a hydrating moisturiser – my favourites are Dr Barbara Sturm or Yu-Be.

Prep The Skin

If you’re covering a blemish, place a dollop of moisturizer on the spot and let it sit for a minute. Then take a blotting paper or non-peeling tissue to remove it entirely. This helps take off any dry skin which could look cakey once covered.

Choose Your Concealer Shade Carefully

Pick a yellow-based concealer for spots as it covers red the best. Be careful not to go too light with the shade because it will look like a highlighter on your face. Apply using a small nylon brush with a circular motion feathering it out and blending all edges. Finish by dusting over the area with a translucent powder.

Forget What You Know About Kohl

Apply by drawing a V on your lid, with the point of the V in your socket, and along the lower lash line. Then using your finger or the fan brush sweep eyeshadow or a lid tint using windshield wiper action to blend the shadow and kohl together. This is a foolproof method for creating a low maintenance eye with socket definition.

Make Blusher Modern

For a 2018 take on blusher, try the ‘blush shadow’ technique. Apply a cream blusher by tapping with your thumb along the apples of your cheeks (always smile to identify the right place) and feather outwards towards your temples. This look is both flattering and modern.

Layer Your Lip Products

For a lip look that lasts the length of the evening, start with a waterproof lip stain. You can apply a couple of coats and let it dry between each. To make the stain look more lived-in, dab a little Homeoplasmine ointment over the top take out the high shine. Keep a tinted lip balm in your evening bag to easily touch-up the colour on the go. My multitasking cheek tint works perfectly for this.

Get That Glow

To lift the face and let your complexion catch the light, apply a clear gloss to your cheekbones and under the eyebrow. You can also apply over blusher or eyeshadow to give these areas a glowy, more worn-in look.
