Andreas Murkudis is a former museum director who has struck out on his own to create a series of shops that feel like art galleries. His three stores are all close to each other on Potsdamer Straße. Set in a former printworks, Store 81 features an edit of more than 300 brands. At no. 98, the focus is furniture – there’s a fully formed apartment to explore. Store 77 is a gallery-style showcase for an individual designer or theme. All three are spaces to enjoy spending time as much as money.

The Square
The Square is a sanctuary of international luxe. Step off the street and into a cool, calm collection of high-end pieces all chosen by owners Emmanuel and Joseph. Loro Piana, Bottega Veneta and Celine are given room to shine alongside newer names like Jacquemus and Coperni, while homewares from Loewe and Gucci are showcased in a sleek apartment-style space. As well as the east Berlin flagship, there’s now an outpost in west Berlin.

Paper & Tea
It’s called Paper & Tea but this one’s really all about the tea. If you didn’t think our continental cousins had anything to teach us about Britain’s favourite brew, this is the place to broaden your mind. Its range spans pure black, green and white teas to unique blends created using premium herbs and fruits. If you can’t get to the standalone store in Charlottenburg, there’s a concession within KaDeWe.

Hallesches Haus
On the canal in Kreuzberg, in an old building that has been both a post office and a nightclub, Hallesches Haus is a thoroughly modern concept. With high ceilings and whitewashed walls, it’s a nice spot for brunch – treat yourself to the Sweet Haus of sourdough waffle, poached quince, baked apple, coconut salted caramel and toasted shaved almonds. It also does a great line in cool homeware for every room, as well as offering some carefully chosen cosmetics and fun fashion accessories.

Dussmann
This sprawling Mitte bookshop covers all genres, has a towering vertical garden and still has room for music and board games departments. Two of its five floors are given over to English language options if you’re looking for something specific, but it’s worth exploring every level – you’ll definitely have time as it’s open late every night.

KaDeWe
By size, this famous department store is second only to Harrods in all of Europe. Like its London rival, it enjoys an exalted position in the minds of consumers in its home city – there was even a TV mini-series made about the life of its founder recently. Each of its eight floors is given over to a different department. We’d start in the ground-level Luxury Boulevard and work upwards from there, finishing in the winter-garden restaurant with its impressive city views.

Kurfürstendamm
Known by locals as Ku’damm, this long and wide 19th-century boulevard cuts a swath through west Berlin. If you ever need to find it, look for the giant, rotating Mercedes sign – that’s on top of the Europa Center at its eastern end. Walk west along Ku’damm from there and you’ll soon run into some of fashion’s biggest names: Gucci, Hermès, Dior and so many more are here. But feel free to wander off the main drag – Fasanenstraße and Schlüterstraßeare handsome, historic streets with stylish shopping opportunities of their own. When you need a coffee or something more substantial, try nearby Savignyplatz.

Voo Store
This hip Kreuzberg spot is on its way to becoming a Berlin institution. Voo Store has made its name over the last decade with always-on-point selections of fashion, beauty, jewellery, magazines and homewares. Jil Sander is a core brand, but you’ll also find the latest sneakers and streetwear. It stays fresh with a constant throughput of art installations, pop-ups and book launches.

This specialist shop in Mitte focuses on all that’s fun and beautiful about stationery and paper. Cult pen brands like Kaweco and Caran d’Ache are presented alongside niche makers from across the continent. There’s cute washi tape to elevate your gift giving, cool cards to say thank you with, and smart notebooks to help you channel some of that famous German efficiency at work.

Schwarzhogerzeil
Nicole Hogerzeil puts together elegantly understated seasonal collections in this contemporary space in Mitte. Her vision spans Dries Van Noten’s masculine tailoring and boyish pieces from Isabel Marant to Studio 163’s fine Mongolian cashmere and Nanushka’s super-soft vegan leather accessories. Her concise ceramics edit is also worth checking out.

Rausch Schokoladenhaus
For a sweet treat, try Rausch Schokoladenhaus on Charlottenstraße. If you’re buying for someone else, browse the world’s longest praline counter on the ground floor. In the unlikely event you can’t find anything there, try the first floor, where house chocolatiers can create something bespoke for you. If you’re chasing immediate self-gratification, there’s a deli for grab-and-go quick hits, or head to the café on the third floor of this handsome corner building.

Next to the city’s famous zoo on the edge of the Tiergarten, Bikini Berlin is a different kind of mall. It’s brought a listed building back to life with a cool gathering of shops and contemporary food options. International brands like Carhartt and American Vintage sit alongside unique local outlets – don’t miss Studio 183 with its ever-changing selection of new fashion, jewellery and interior designers. When you’re done, the rooftop merits a look for its zoo views.
