Tirana
Albania’s capital is a lively, fast-evolving city that blends communist-era relics with a new and vibrant energy. Colourful buildings, cool cafés and an emerging food scene mean you’ll want to spend at least a day or two here before heading south. The central Skanderbeg Square is surrounded by museums, historic mosques and galleries, while the once-industrial Blloku neighbourhood is now full of bars and restaurants. Take the Dajti Express cable car to enjoy panoramic city views and trips into Mt Dajti National Park, visit the House of Leaves for a glimpse into Albania’s secret police history or check out the 15th-century Petrela Castle. Sarandë
On Albania’s southern Ionian coast, Sarandë is the country’s best-known beach city. Once a quiet fishing village, it’s now a lively spot in the summer, known for its warm waters, sunset views and proximity to must-sees like Butrint National Park and Ksamil’s paradise beaches. The palm-lined promenade is full of restaurants, gelato stands and bars, while ferries from Corfu dock just minutes away.
Dhërmi
Between the mountains and the Ionian Sea, Dhërmi is one of Albania’s most picturesque beach towns. Known for its turquoise water, white pebbled beaches and grand villa, it’s becoming increasingly popular for travellers looking for a quieter, more polished Riviera experience. The old village sits up on the hill, while the beach area has grown into a summer hotspot for relaxed beach bars and clear-water swimming coves.
Himarë
Smaller and more laidback than Sarandë or Vlorë, Himarë is a quaint seaside town known for its slow pace and natural beauty. The waterfront promenade offers casual cafés and fish restaurants, and the nearby beaches (including Livadhi and Jale) are among the Riviera’s best. Himarë also has a rich Greek-Albanian cultural mix, reflected in its cuisine and local language. Hikers will love exploring its hilltop villages and nearby olive groves.
Vlorë
A major coastal city and the northern gateway to the Albanian Riviera, Vlorë is where the Adriatic meets the Ionian Sea. It has a lively, local feel and is an important port city with a long history – it was the site of Albania’s declaration of independence in 1912. Today, it’s known for its long beach promenade, family-friendly atmosphere and proximity to natural sites like Zvernec Island and Llogara National Park. On the food front, seafood restaurant Paradise Beach has been a hotspot for almost 30 years.
Gjirokastër
This UNESCO-listed city in southern Albania is one of the country's architectural gems. Built into the mountainside, Gjirokastër is known for its historic stone houses, narrow cobbled alleys and towering hilltop castle. It’s steeped in history and today it attracts travellers interested in culture, heritage and traditional craftsmanship. It’s also home to a thriving bazaar, numerous museums and impressive views over the Drino Valley.
Berat
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Berat is often called the ‘City of a Thousand Windows’ thanks to its white Ottoman houses that cascade down the hillsides. Set along the Osum River in central Albania, the city has a peaceful atmosphere ideal for slowing down between coastal stops. Key sights include Berat Castle, the Onufri Iconography Museum and the stone-arched bridges connecting the city’s two historic quarters. A growing number of local wineries also make this a great destination for food and wine fans.
