How To Wear Dungarees The SL Way

I can go either way with dungarees – I have a corduroy black pair that I like to wear with a frilly shirt, blazer and heeled boots. But I'm just as happy in this striped pair from Milldred with clogs and a basket, ready for the farmer's market. Dungarees have the Sunday-coffee-and-flowers association that I kind of love – I just add some extra elements, like a really oversized coat and some statement sunglasses. Milldred is a special brand that focuses on crafting the perfect pair of dungarees from organic cotton, so if you're not sure where to start, it’s a good place to find stylish, seasonless options.

Denim is my go-to fabric for dungarees, and I love how easily I can style this pale wash with neutrals. They’re the perfect colour to mix with soft grey, cream and winter white. The styling doesn’t require much thought: they’re great for layering with soft knits and winter coats, and I always team my dungarees with trainers and a crossbody bag.

I have worn dungarees for years. These days I prefer more grown-up styles like these amazing leather dungarees from Whistles. I contrast the hardness of the leather with this Aje blouse. I would wear this look to work or out for lunch, and would throw on some chunky black leather loafers and gold jewellery to finish.

I prefer a wide-leg dungaree that I can dress up, like this black pair from Frame. A monochrome look is foolproof – I’ve styled mine with a cream roll-neck and ankle boots. To add interest, I’ve layered a textured, cropped jacket over the top.

I prefer the fit of my dungarees to be somewhat relaxed, but that means I need a couple of sharper pieces to bring it all together. A crisp white shirt – with oversized cuffs and sleeve detail – does the trick. A blazer adds a bit more structure and silver loafers give the look a cooler edge.

I rarely wear just a pair of jeans and a jumper as they don’t look very good on me. Switching the jeans for dungarees feels that bit more interesting and I've loved wearing this washed black pair from Free People with a chunky roll-neck from ARKET. Burgundy adidas Gazelles add a pop of colour.
