Curate a selection of classic pieces you can rely on. I love to mix tailoring, white tees and leather totes with unexpected details to keep things feeling fresh. It’s the smaller touches – like jewellery or pops of colour – that elevate a look. Inspiration for them can come from anywhere and everywhere – travelling, vintage shopping, art, Pinterest and Instagram are all good starting points.
Learn from your mistakes. Experimenting is essential – I’ve spent years trying different things to figure out what suits me best. I recommend taking a photo of your outfit every day and saving your favourites – it’s the easiest way to see what works. Also, working with a stylist can be helpful – just a quick session on colour and shapes transformed how my mum shops today.
Invest in high-quality pieces. Comfort, quality and cohesion are key – if something doesn’t feel good, you won’t wear it. My wardrobe is built on hardworking staples like white tees, tailored blazers and well-made accessories. Brands like Aligne, Sézane, Massimo Dutti and Citizens of Humanity are go-tos, but I also love mixing in pieces from ARKET, COS, Hush and vintage finds.
Add colour where it feels right. Neutrals are a great base, but a pop of colour can make a look feel fresh. I love rich chocolate tones, buttery yellows, navy, pastels, blues and strong pinks – colours that work well for my ‘winter’ colouring. Sticking to a rule of three – never wearing more than three colours at once – helps everything feel cohesive.
Use accessories to transform a look. Accessories are the easiest way to refresh your wardrobe. I love playful touches like bag charms, sculptural jewellery and colourful beads to make a look more personal. Discovering brands like Alhaja Cult Store and ByGabs has been game-changing.
Find the right fit – and tailor your clothes when needed. Fit is everything – if something doesn’t sit right, you won’t wear it. I often tailor pieces to make them feel just right, and play around with sizing to get the best result. Now, I only buy pieces I truly love, even if they’re discounted – impulse sale buys rarely work out.
Find your failsafe combo. My go-to outfit formula includes Citizens of Humanity jeans and a white tee from COS. Layering with knitwear, blazers or adding a statement accessory brings everything together. Wide-leg trousers – especially black or striped – are another easy win.
Plan outfits ahead of time. It sounds simple but deciding on your outfit the night before really works. Having a few saved looks on Instagram or Pinterest helps too – five minutes of planning can completely transform your morning.
Track down vintage pieces to make your wardrobe special. Vintage shopping is all about the thrill of discovery – my favourite pieces are always the ones with a story. I’ve found gems from places like Accessories of Old in London, Beyond Retro and even eBay. A tiny shop in Florence was where I found my most treasured earrings – big, gold, fossil-shell studs.
Embrace trends with caution. I don’t follow all the trends but I like using accessories to stay relevant. Bag charms, rope-style laces, sculptural jewellery and beaded necklaces are where I have the most fun.
Build a wardrobe that feels personal. I only buy statement pieces if I really love them and can think of at least five outfits I could style them with. Making sure everything is practical, personal and cohesive is the ultimate goal.
