Should You Try House Cleansing?

Should You Try House Cleansing?

Have you ever felt like your house might be holding on to bad energy? Or had trouble selling a property? You might need to try house cleansing - a spiritual ritual designed to clear negative energy and provide a sense of calm to your surroundings. Here, Reiki master and teacher Emma Hands, shows us the importance of cleansing and how and when to perform one…

What exactly is house cleansing?

The tradition of cleansing has been around for centuries and is an ancient spiritual ritual originating in Native America. It used to clear negative energy and for healing - buildings store stagnant energies, as the human body does, and so regular cleansing restores balance, benefiting the health and wellbeing of its occupants.

Negative energy sticks to everything, so de-cluttering shelves, cupboards, draws, basements, everywhere, helps alongside cleansing. Essentially, the electromagnetic field (or aura) around our body, as well as the space around us, becomes blocked with harmful positive ions that can make us feel fatigued, sluggish and burnt out. The smoke from a ‘smudge stick’ (a bundle of sacred herbs which is burned) involved in cleansing absorbs and dispels these, cleansing our energy field and thus that of our environment. The sage used neutralises the positive charge and releases large amounts of negative ions into the atmosphere, allowing us to feel lighter and freer. The term 'cut the tension with a knife' during an argument or when someone is in a terrible mood is so true - it’s a build-up of positive ions that causes the air to become stale. House cleansing reverses this, purifying and cleansing the atmosphere.

Why do people perform house cleanses & when is the best time to do it?

When viewing a new home, or walking into a current home or office, people will sometimes say, “It just doesn’t feel right”. This is because the property has energy blockages from previous experiences of the inhabitants, likely brought on by the challenges of life, such as divorce, illness or loss and even when outside the home, they can bring negativity into the environment. Every time we meet another person we exchange energies. If they’re angry, we pick this up and it can then be dispensed into our home.

A cleanse can be performed at poignant moments in a person’s life, such as when someone is looking to start afresh with a new project or adventure; after personal difficulties or an illness; when moving into a new space or if the occupants in a home change; or if anyone in the property is having problems sleeping. Basically whenever you feel ‘stuck’ and want to improve the quality of your life. At these times, you can remove any negative energies that existed before or that have accumulated over time.

Sounds a bit hocus pocus - does it actually work?

Try it and see! I’ve cleansed houses that have been stuck on the property market for months, then after a cleanse they sell really quickly. We all pick up energy, often without realising, and others can leave their negativity in your property. Some can remain stored within our bodies, preventing people from moving forwards and succeeding with their goals and dreams.

Talk to us about the medical benefits of house cleansing…

Cleansing provides a sense of calmness and positivity that’s similar to meditation, enhancing concentration and boosting creativity. The more relaxed and balanced we can be, then the healthier our bodies are in the long term. Smudging actively kills bacteria in the air, along with bad energies, so is good for people who are affected by poor air quality, particularly those suffering from respiratory and lung problems, headaches, asthma and common colds.

Sage in the plant world is known by the name salvia, which in Latin means ‘healthy’ or ‘to heal’, and burning it regularly increases your memory, awareness and mood. It cleanses and purifies the body, mind and soul, along with our environment - it’s entirely possible to feel a change in the air immediately after use. White sage also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, which boost mental clarity and improves air quality. Scientific studies have shown that medicinal smoke is a powerful antiseptic that decreases the level of harmful bacteria by around 94%. It repels the kind of airborne pathogens that cause viruses and disease.

How does it help people who suffer from depression?

Smudging is good for depression as it actively kills bacteria, lifts your mood, provides mental clarity and a certain level of relaxation. It is becoming increasingly more popular as people look outside of the ‘norm’, rather than relying on often addictive pharmaceutical drugs that frequently only ‘put a plaster’ on the problem rather than looking at the root emotional causes.

So, what's the process? You have previously said it involves applying Reiki energy to each room - what is Reiki?

My personal method involves building an intuitive Crystal Grid in advance and placing in the home, prior to the ceremony, then using sound healing, burning sage and applying Reiki energy to each room. Also, chanting mantras and the use of prayers where necessary, to further aid the removal of stagnant energy from the space.

Reiki is an extremely powerful and effective energy healing treatment that ignites the immune system and our own ability to heal, restoring emotional, physical and mental balance. Blockages and toxins accumulate overtime due to the complexities of life, negative 'learned' behaviours and stored trauma. It works by subtly changing the flow of energy through and within the body. Life challenges cause the flow of energy within us to be stifled and build-ups can lead to diseases. Treatments bring the body back into equilibrium, relieving stress, anxiety and depression; easing pain; aiding relaxation and personal growth; and strengthening overall health. I apply Reiki to each room to further cleanse the energies and protect the home from negativity.

What are you burning? And does it leave a strong smell?

I mainly burn White Sage and also Frankincense, Palo Santo and Incense, especially after illness and extreme bouts of depression.

Sage is very gentle, so it doesn’t leave a strong smell and it’s extremely rare for the smoke to set off fire alarms. It is a good idea to open windows during, or just after the cleanse, to further release negativity and ensuring no lingering smells.

And what does the smoke do?

The smoke attaches to the bad energy in the air - often trapped in corners and amongst clutter - and dissipates it, transmuting the energy to positive. Regular cleansing, of our homes and our bodies, is vital for our health, wellbeing and mental clarity.

Fascinating! How long does it take and what does it cost?

It can take anything from one and a half to up to 10 hours, and the cost depends on the size of the property, the rooms contained within, the location and the amount of stagnant energies present. Quotes are available via email, emma@handserenity.com or on HandSerenity.com.
