Hair Trends To Try Now

With a new season upon us, it’s time to refresh and rethink our look with these trending hair colours and styles. SheerLuxe contributor Tamara Corin shares all.

The Modern Balayage

If you’ve experimented with chunky balayage but want more of a subtle, natural finish to your colour, Christel Lundqvist, Founder of Stil Salon, suggests the prism light technique as a softer alternative. ‘Free hand’ painting is applied to the ends of your hair using two tones of lighter shades, layered upon one another, to give a seamless look. The end result is super-natural and feminine.

The New Grey

By no means is the trend for grey hair going away, but it has since evolved from the bright silvery shades of last year. Previously it was all about all-over colour but now the focus is about layering different grey tones to make your hair look subtle and grown up rather than too fashion.

Big On Braiding

Take note from the cool kids, braiding is back in a big way. We’re not just talking pretty plaits but intricate designs that show off your creativity. Be warned, it takes a lot of practice, but once you’ve nailed the style, braids are functional and can fit in with busy lifestyles. For plaits that mean business, take inspiration from Erdem and MaxMara’s tough and sleek designs. If, however, you’re not good with your hands, lightly crimp sections of your hair instead. We love the GHD Platinum+ Styler, from £175, for quick and easy styling.

Embrace Your Texture

For the first time in decades, people are moving away from Brazilian blow-dries with women finally embracing their natural curl, colour and hair texture by going au natural. According to Zoe Irwin, Wella’s Global Trend Ambassador, the afro hair market is growing rapidly with an estimated 34% increase in the next five years. With innovative styling products that calm, de-frizz and condition, harsh salon treatments are becoming a trend of yesterday.

The Messy Bun

All thanks to Meghan Markle, the low-maintenance bun has become a flawless up-do that works for every occasion. It’s completely foolproof to create with such a relaxed finish that it won’t matter if a few hair strands are out of place. Hooray! If you prefer a glossier result with no obvious fly-aways, smooth MorroccanOil Smoothing Lotion, £29.85, over your hair before styling.

The Red Alert!

You heard it here first. It’s the colour of the season. Originally seen on the Miu Miu catwalk, a vibrant all-over red, from roots to ends, gives a glossy, almost glass-like effect to hair. According to Sam Burnett, Creative Director of Hare & Bone, when it comes to what red to choose, light complexions will instantly suit reddish-copper tones, medium skin tones can get away with almost every red while dark tones should veer towards plum and cherry shades.

The Speedy Blow Dry

With blow-dry bars on every high street, it’s no surprise that getting your hair professionally ‘done' has become a part of many women’s weekly beauty routine. It’s accessible, affordable, saves you time and makes you feel and look like you have your whole life in control – even if you don’t. For pre-meeting grooming, book yourself in to the DryBy London salon that opens its doors as early as 7am.

The 80s Revival

We never thought we’d say it either, but welcome back to the banana hair clip. Hair guru Guido Palau brought it back to life at Alexander Wang’s show early this year and it’s been making its way into the high street ever since. Just add a bum bag and your outfit is 80s ready!

The Statement Hair Accessories

Set to be an even bigger trend for 2019,  channel bows, flowers, and scrunchies galore or, for the ultimate head-turner, try a scarf. Tie the scarf at the top of your head, or wrap at the base of a low ponytail and tie into a bow. For a real style statement put all your hair in a scarf. If this sounds a little too complicated, check out the new Taylor Taylor ‘Tie It Up’ hair menu (exclusive to Liberty) where Liberty heritage print silk scarves are threaded through ponytails and fashioned into bows.

The Baby Bangs

Want to inject your style with an edgy feel? Micro fringes give a fresh and modern look. The cut needs to be razor-sharp, choppy and bold. Take inspiration from A-list favourite hair stylist, Sam McKnight’s creations at Dries Van Noten’s S/S 2019 catwalk and accessorise with embellished hair bands for added sophistication. Just don’t be tempted to do a DIY job, there’s nothing worse than a wonky fringe!
