London’s Best Winter Terraces & Rooftops

Crack open the mulled wine – winter is here and the capital is swathing its outdoor spaces in faux fur, fairy lights and fire pits. From rooftop ice rinks through to igloos, curling lanes and fondues, this list contains everything you need for an al fresco evening out…

Coppa Club

The ever-popular Coppa Club Igloos are back for 2019. Located between Tower Bridge and the Shard, the igloos provide one of the cosiest winter set-ups in town. Guests can settle into sleek Scandi surrounds with sheepskin rugs, fluffy blankets and a twinkly night sky – a great way to warm up and chill out after a day in the city. Last year, the venue teamed up with gin brand Sipsmith to create a special winter gin cocktail menu, so we’re keeping our eye out to see what’s in store for 2019. Regardless, make sure to book now – these sell out every season.

Somerset House

Somerset House’s Edmond J Safra Fountain Court is the backdrop to one of London’s most beautiful ice rinks, where you can skate day or night with family and friends. This year’s Skate Lates will feature an extra-special series of music nights throughout the season, including sets from DJ Yoda and Joe Goddard. Après-skate, guests can treat themselves at Fortnum’s Lodge with a ‘Skate Extra’. All designed for two to share, these include the likes of chocolate fondue and champagne. Fortnum’s Christmas Arcade will also return, transforming the West Wing into a one-stop festive shopping destination.

Skylight London

Following a successful summer season, Skylight is staying open, bringing out the blankets, turning on the heaters, and transforming its sunlit terraces into warm and inviting spaces designed for shorter days and cooler nights. Its winter pop-up is home to a rooftop ice rink alongside festive food, drink and activities such as ice hockey shooting. The team has added cosy igloos and mountain huts on its top level, transporting guests to a wintry wonderland perched above the city – the perfect spot to sip on a mulled wine, roasted chestnuts in hand, and admire London’s twinkling skyline with friends.

Angler

Angler has partnered with Laurent-Perrier for a festive installation on its heated rooftop terrace. The champagne house has created a winter cocktail menu and Angler’s exec chef Gary Foulkes will be serving a special small-plate menu: think venison bolognese croquettes; chestnut hummus with grilled pitta bread; and reblochon with Alsace bacon and caramelised onion flat bread. The terrace has been fully kitted out for the Christmas period with glistening baubles, silk drapery, crystal icicles and Christmas trees. The drinks list will include Laurent-Perrier’s La Cuvée Brut champagne and Cuvée Rosé, as well as two cocktails: the ‘LP Winter’ (Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée with honey, sloe gin, lemon juice, clove, rosemary and berries), and ‘Rosé Mémoire’ (Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé with redcurrant jelly, clementine juice and redcurrants).

Aviary

Aviary has relaunched its rooftop igloos as part of a collaboration with Talisker whisky from the Isle of Skye. You’ll find the ‘Skye-line Igloos’ ten floors up, each one decorated with natural and nautical elements reflecting the wild, storm-lashed environment of the whisky’s homeland. Igloo menus feature wild whisky cocktails including the spicy ‘Scotch Mist’, the smokey ‘Northern Lights’ and the ‘Talisker Campfire Hot Chocolate’, a warming drink to be sipped under the stars. Keep an eye out for tasting masterclasses taking place across the season.

Coq d’Argent

French restaurant Coq d’Argent has launched an après-ski-inspired pop-up for the festive period. The two ‘Lodge d’Argent’ chalets have been transformed into cosy hideaways complete with modern white furniture, faux-fur blankets, Courchevel-themed ski décor and fairy lights. Guests will be served an array of warming cheesy dishes, plus a selection of cocktails, created in partnership with Hennessy. Choices include the ‘Snowstorm’, a mix of Hennessy Very Special cognac, Amaro Angostura liqueur, lemon juice and strawberry purée; and the ‘Coq Toddy’, which combines Hennessy Very Special cognac, dark rum, Roots Rakomelo, honey and bitters. Moët & Chandon champagne will also be on hand.

Dalloway Terrace

Dalloway Terrace changes each season. The current incarnation embraces the gilded hues of autumn with an abundance of gold-coated leaves, natural cork bark and brushed gold butterflies by London florist Wild at Heart. Alongside the venue’s autumnal afternoon tea, exec head chef Byron Moussouris has made some seasonal changes to the restaurant’s menu: we like the sound of black fig salad with San Daniele ham, gorgonzola, picante and walnuts; rack of lamb with charred squash, peas and salsa verde; and hot smoked trout salad with horseradish and soft egg. Later this month, the space will be transformed into a winter wonderland. We can’t wait to see what the team comes up with.

The Berkeley

The Berkeley’s rooftop garden has been transformed into a forest cinema. This pine-lined outdoor theatre is London’s only private rooftop cinema and features four wooden cabins, custom-made to fit two guests each. Wrapped in blankets and armed with hot water bottles, guests will enjoy two cult festive classics daily: Home Alone followed by The Holiday. Dishes on offer throughout the screenings include truffle macaroni cheese; spiced beef hot dogs; cheese fondue and a truffle-topped potato rosti. On the French restaurant’s roof, the space has been dressed with The White Company’s luxury cashmere throws, hanging outdoor lanterns and white sheepskin rugs, while candles around the terrace fill the air with notes of chestnuts and pine. Rosewood London

The ‘Elyx Chalet’ at Rosewood London has been created in partnership with vodka brand Absolut Elyx. The hotel’s courtyard is inspired by southern Sweden: traditional fir trees adorned with fairy lights and ‘snow’ surround the chalet; inside you’ll find plenty of cushions and throws in velvet and fur. A copper bar will serve hot and cold cocktails, such as the ‘Gurka Martini’, made with Douglas fir-infused Cocchi Americano and manzanilla sherry; and a ‘Taiga Old Fashioned’ with porcini mushroom-infused whisky, oak smoke and black walnut bitters, garnished with Douglas fir to heighten the sense of being in a real winter forest.
