FOR AL FRESCO AFTERNOONS:

Il Gattopardo, Mayfair

Inspired by 1960s Italy, Il Gattopardo opened on Mayfair’s Albemarle Street 18 months ago. It’s part of the group containing COYA, Amazónico and Bar des Prés. The menu features Italian classics and modern interpretations of dishes from across Italy, with a particular focus on Amalfi, Sicily and other southern islands. Interiors take influence from the style of the celebrated Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti; the 85-cover restaurant has a hidden courtyard terrace with a fully retractable roof, as well as a private dining room. The weekend lunch menu (£58pp) includes antipasti dishes designed to be shared family style, including tuna tartare, Tuscan kale and ricotta salad, Bolognese arancini and prosciutto pizzetta. Mains include aubergine parmigiana, spinach and ricotta cannelloni and beef sirloin with honey roasted carrots and parmesan mashed potatoes. Finish with its famous tiramisu – diners queue down the road for it.

FOR AFFORDABLE LUXURY:

Bébé Bob, Soho

From the team behind French-inspired phenomenon Bob Bob Ricard, Bébé Bob is a fun spin-off across the road from the Soho original. With its plush interiors – think red velvet seating, mahogany panelling and modernist-inspired artwork – the restaurant is the perfect spot to settle down for a glass of fizz and long lunch post-West End shopping. Bébé Bob does one thing really well: rotisserie chicken served with its signature smooth and silky jus. You can also order chicken caesar salad or chicken schnitzel, all of which are served with sides of skinny fries, sautéed kale, roasted veg and truffle cauliflower cheese. There’s a classic French dessert menu featuring dishes like profiteroles and tarte tatin, and a current cocktail menu created by Mr Lyan – we recommend the mini martini with a lemon twist.

FOR DELICIOUS PASTA:

Trullo, Islington

The sister restaurant to super-popular Padella, Trullo’s simple, chic interiors make it an oasis of good taste, but the food is the real star. Expect fresh pasta rolled to order, and the intoxicating smells of fish and meat cooked over burning coals. The menu changes daily, but Sunday lunch could include antipasti of radicchio with fennel, blood orange and pomegranate; trout carpaccio with beetroot and horseradish crème fraiche; and hand-dived scallops with 'nduja and Amalfi lemon. Mains could be beef shin ragu with pappardelle, ravioli with Westcombe ricotta, or lemon sole with clams and vermouth. There’s also a nice wine list featuring bottles from small Italian and European producers.

FOR GREAT VALUE:

Josephine, Chelsea

We challenge you to find a restaurant offering better value in this part of London. Michelin-starred Claude Bosi’s most personal project to date, Josephine is run with his wife Lucy, and is inspired by his late grandmother and the traditional bouchons he often frequented in his hometown of Lyon. The menu is filled with nostalgic French bistro classics: expect onion soup, cheese souffle, leek vinaigrette and traditional mains like cod in beurre blanc sauce. Two courses will set you back £24.50, while three cost a reasonable £29.50. The wine menu only features pours from the Rhone Valley, including some from Josephine’s own label. In keeping with the classic French feel, this is available in bouchon-style metre wine, where the bottle is left on the table for guests to help themselves to more. Look out for a second outpost in Marylebone later this year.

FOR BEAUTIFUL INTERIORS:

Mount St. Restaurant, Mayfair

Artfarm – the company behind the Fife Arms in Braemar and Roth Bar & Grill in Somerset – opened Mount St Restaurant & Rooms just over two years ago. It quickly became a favourite among the style set and those in the know. Housed in a beautiful building in Mayfair, the restaurant features a collection of four designed spaces that bring together food, drink and world-class modern art – including original pieces by Lucien Freud, Andy Warhol and Henri Matisse. For Sunday lunch, start with oysters and caviar or starters of omelette Arnold Bennett, crab crumpets or beef tartare. Mains might include lobster pie for two, monkfish with mash and lobster peppercorn sauce, and rack of lamb with peas, broad beans and mint jelly. Finish with sticky choux buns or homemade chocolates.

FOR SOMETHING NEW:

Bottarga, Chelsea

The newest opening from the team behind Pachamama Marylebone and SL favourite Zēphyr, Bottarga is on the King’s Road and has all the hallmarks of a buzzy restaurant – picture smartly designed menus, lots of stainless steel serveware and eye-catching candlelight on each table. Signature dishes include bluefin tuna ceviche, bottarga orzo with XO oil, grilled prawns and lemon chicken with a thyme emulsion. Not to be missed is the Insta-sensation burnt chocolate cheesecake, which arrives at the table with a jug of salted caramel chocolate sauce.

Henri, Soho

Renowned chef Jackson Boxer and the hospitality pioneers behind the Experimental Group recently opened Henri, a Parisian-inspired restaurant. This collaboration follows their success at Cowley Manor Experimental in the Cotswolds and draws on Boxer’s experience from leading London restaurants like Brunswick House. As of last week, the Sunday lunch special features a shared roast duck crown, served with confit duck leg, cassoulet and braised haricot beans with onions. Sides include duck fat fries, mushroom hollandaise for dipping, and a zesty endive and orange salad.
