Retinoids

“The best-evidenced ingredients, and the ones I see the best results with, are retinoids. Any form can work, as long as it’s suitable for your skin type, but it’s important to build up your tolerance gradually. Start with a lower strength and slowly work your way up. The benefits are significant: retinoids can increase collagen synthesis, boost TIMP, an enzyme that helps protect collagen, and reduce the enzymes responsible for breaking it down. Over time, they can also improve epidermal thickness, soften the appearance of wrinkles and strengthen skin that has started to lose elasticity.”

Growth Factors & Peptides

“Growth factors and peptides are both useful for supporting collagen. Peptides are short chains of amino acids and essentially act as building blocks for proteins such as collagen and elastin. When applied topically, they work like little messengers, signalling to skin cells that it’s time to repair and regenerate, which can improve firmness. Growth factors are lab-made proteins that communicate with skin cells to encourage repair and support collagen production. There are good and bad growth-factor formulas out there, so it’s important to know what you’re using. One I particularly like is the Allies of Skin serum.”

Microneedling

“Microneedling is one of my favourite treatments I offer in the clinic. I call it the collagen banking treatment. It does this by triggering the skin's natural healing response to build and preserve a denser collagen reserve before natural aging occurs. Just remember microneedling can cause reactions and deeper is not always better: you want to find a skilled practitioner, as it needs to be bespoke and tailored to your skin type and needs.”

Radiofrequency & Laser Treatments

“When it comes to collagen-producing treatments in-clinic, for me it’s about targeting the deeper layers of the skin and creating a controlled wound-healing response, encouraging the skin to produce new collagen and elastin. Radio frequency uses controlled heat to stimulate the dermis, where collagen and elastin are found. I also like the Byonik cold laser, which uses a gentle 658nm red laser wavelength to activate fibroblasts and support collagen production. Both can give an immediate glow but the real benefits come over time as the skin becomes firmer and smoother.”

Diet

“Eating a balanced diet full of protein rich foods, antioxidants and zinc provides your body with the essential building blocks it needs to make collagen naturally. Collagen levels start depleting in your mid-20s, so the older we get, the more important it is to make healthy choices that nourish your body. Fatty fish, nuts, egg whites, colourful veggies, bone broth, citrus foods and berries are all essential.”
