9 Of The Best London Restaurants With Delis
Pastificio at Café Murano, Covent Garden
The little sister to Angela Hartnett’s Michelin-starred Murano offers back-to-basics Italian fare and is one of our favourite spots for aperitivo. Pastificio – the next-door pasta factory and deli – holds everything from ravioli-making workshops to private dining. The store specialises in food and drink either made for, or used in, Hartnett’s restaurants: fresh pastas and sauces are produced daily, and are all available for guests to cook at home – ideal for last-minute suppers and dinner parties. An all-Italian line-up of cakes, breads, cheeses, oils, chutneys, coffee and wine completes the takeaway options.

Brindisa, Borough Market
In the mid-90s, Tapas Brindisa opened its original warehouse and first shop in the Floral Hall at Borough Market. In 2004, a space became available in the market, and it was here the team created London’s first no-reservations, traditional tapas bar. Its shop offers a great range of Spanish food: think high-quality hand-carved Ibèrico and Serrano hams, fresh and cured meats and a selection of Spanish cheeses and accompaniments, plus award-winning tinned fish, nuts, olives, pulses and some exceptional olive oils and vinegars.

Daylesford, Notting Hill
This foodie hotspot is Notting Hill’s posh take on a rustic farm shop. One of the best farm shops for sustainability, the Daylesford team has its own abattoir and an award-winning cheesemonger at its Gloucestershire residence. At its Notting Hill site, Londoners can stock up on everything from bircher muesli and cold-pressed juices to fresh pastries, artisan cheeses – or enjoy a farmhouse fry-up in the adjoining café.

Honey & Spice is just across the road from Honey & Co restaurant. Here you’ll find a grocery store where you can stock up on everything you need for dinner and then some: picture shelves piled high with fruit and vegetables, fresh spices, an array of salads and dips, plus hard-to-come-by dry store ingredients like freekeh and kadaif pastry. St John, Covent Garden
This bakery and wine shop comes from the team behind acclaimed nose-to-tail restaurant St John. Located in Neal’s Yard, its late-2018 launch followed the success of two pop-ups. This permanent spot also serves fresh sourdough, raisin and rye loaves, delicious doughnuts, morning pastries and afternoon eccles cakes. Best of all, the shelves are laden with an all-French line up of wines and champagnes. Need some cheese to accompany a bottle of bordeaux? Pop over to the original Neal’s Yard Dairy over the courtyard.

Lina Stores, Soho
On Brewer Street, family-run Lina Stores heaves with the very best of Italian produce – olive oils, cheese, stacks of tinned tomatoes, prosecco, cured meats and fresh coffee are piled high. But it’s the pasta – made fresh every morning – that’s really made this delicatessen a hit with Italians and locals alike. The deli takes its name from the original founder Lina, a formidable lady from Genova who established the delicatessen in 1944. Now, aside from the original shop, there are two recently launched restaurants, around the corner in Soho and up in King’s Cross – the perfect places to sample the very best of the deli.

Prawn on the Lawn, Islington
This ever-popular licensed fishmongers and seafood restaurant has sites in both London and Padstow. Established in 2013 by Rick Toogood and his wife Katie, Prawn on the Lawn on Upper Street began life as a seafood bar and fishmonger but has now been extended to include a 35-seater restaurant and private dining room, serving tapas-style fish dishes. Busy Londoners can call to order for collection in the morning or – best of all – drop off their roasting tins first thing, so the fish can be marinated, ready to collect after work and put straight in the oven.

Ottolenghi, Various Locations
Ottolenghi has a range of delis and restaurants across London (Notting Hill, Islington, Spitalfields and Belgravia), each known for their cake selection, vibrant salads, pantry items and wine. While much has changed since the first shop launched in 2002 – including the expansion of the company’s thriving restaurants and online shop – much has remained the same, from towering displays of pastries to giant bowls of its much-copied dinner party-style salads and accompaniments. Fitzrovia restaurant Rovi and Soho’s Nopi also have products on sale, including all of Yotam Ottolenghi’s cookbooks and branded table linen.
