This supernatural horror series is set in a small Wisconsin town where people who have died suddenly return, looking and behaving just as they did before. As the community struggles to understand what’s happening, Deputy Dana Cypress (Melanie Scrofano) is tasked with investigating a murder, while also trying to protect her younger sister, one of the newly revived. Based on the acclaimed comic book series, it’s a darker, more mysterious take on the undead genre.

The Airport Chaplain, Netflix

Airports are places where emotions run high, making a chaplain on hand to offer support when things go wrong a fairly logical idea. This oddball drama follows Tobias Wallace (Hugo Weaving), an unconventional cleric working in an airport who has little time for rules and prefers to do things his own way. His methods might usually get results but when one of his shortcuts leads to a major security breach, his maverick approach lands him in serious trouble. His new boss Mira (Shabana Azeez, The Pitt) is determined to keep him in check, setting up an uneasy relationship between the by-the-book manager and her decidedly unorthodox new employee.

Dalliance, Paramount+

It’s boomers behaving badly in this glossy drama about the wealthy over-60s of Sydney. Hugo Weaving plays Billy, a happily married man whose unexpected spark with restaurateur Dani (Heather Mitchell) quickly becomes much more complicated than he anticipated. So convinced is Billy that his marriage to Rose (Georgie Parker) is unshakeable that he decides to introduce the two women – a decision that has far-reaching consequences for everyone involved. There’s plenty of melodrama along the way, but the series is refreshing in its focus on the love lives, desires and mistakes of an older generation.

Dark Matter, Apple TV+

Joel Edgerton returns as physicist Jason Dessen in the second season of this mind-bending sci-fi thriller. After being pulled into an alternate version of his life, Jason is still trying to find his way back to his wife Daniela and son Charlie, while contending with another version of himself who has very different ideas about how things should play out. Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Oakes Fegley, Jimmi Simpson and Dayo Okeniyi also return. Expect more parallel worlds, complicated choices and the increasingly unsettling question of whether there really is such a thing as the ‘right’ version of your life.

Meet The Owens, Prime Video

Michael Owen has never been afraid to poke fun at his own reputation, and this new documentary series starts by asking the obvious question: is the former Liverpool and England striker really as dull as he claims? Cameras follow Owen both at home with his wife and four children and into his other great passion – horse racing, with the ex-footballer now owning around 140 horses. What unfolds is less a portrait of the supposedly “boring” footballer and more a glimpse into the everyday life of a wealthy, middle-aged dad who enjoys his hobbies, winds up his children and seems perfectly happy in his own world. For anyone with a preconceived idea of Michael Owen, this probably won’t change it – but it could be an entertaining watch nonetheless.

The Dog Stars

If post-apocalyptic survival films are your thing, Ridley Scott’s latest is one to have on the radar. Based on Peter Heller’s novel, The Dog Stars is set after a devastating flu pandemic has wiped out most of humanity. Former pilot Hig (Jacob Elordi) lives in relative isolation with his dog, alongside the hardened Bangley (Josh Brolin), until signs of life elsewhere offer the possibility that there could be more to the world than survival. Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney and Benedict Wong also star.

Adults, Disney+

The wonderfully messy 20-somethings of Adults are back for a second season. Samir, Billie, Paul Baker, Issa and Anton are still living together in Samir’s childhood home, attempting to navigate work, dating, friendships and all the small indignities that come with figuring out how to be a functioning adult. Expect more questionable decisions, elaborate excuses and the sort of conversations you’d usually only have with your closest friends. This season promises to dig further into the realities of growing up – without suggesting any of them have actually mastered it yet.

One Night Only

What if you had just one night a year when sex was legal? That’s the slightly bonkers premise behind this new romantic comedy from Anyone But You director Will Gluck. In a future America where premarital sex has been outlawed, couples get a 12-hour exemption once a year – and Owen (Callum Turner) has very specific plans for his. But after discovering his girlfriend has other ideas, his carefully planned evening quickly falls apart. Meanwhile, singer Allie (Monica Barbaro) is navigating the same strange dating landscape, and the pair’s paths eventually cross in increasingly chaotic circumstances. Molly Ringwald, Maya Hawke, Julia Fox and Pete Davidson also feature.

The Marlow Murder Club, BBC2

A cosy crime drama with a stellar British cast, The Marlow Murder Club follows retired archaeologist and crossword setter Judith Potts (Samantha Bond), whose peaceful life in Marlow is upended when she believes she’s witnessed a murder. When the police are reluctant to take her seriously, she launches her own investigation, recruiting local dog walker Suzie (Jo Martin) and vicar’s wife Becks (Cara Horgan) to help crack the case. Based on Robert Thorogood’s bestselling novels, it’s a smart, gently funny whodunnit with plenty of twists.

Vigil, BBC 

Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie are back for a third round of high-stakes detective drama and this time the investigation takes them far beyond British waters. DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre head to a remote Arctic research station after a member of a covert British special forces team is found dead. What initially looks like a murder soon becomes tangled up in an increasingly tense international power struggle, with several nations vying for control of the Arctic’s resources as the climate changes. As Amy and Kirsten race to uncover the truth, they’re forced to question who they can trust – while their own relationship and careers are put under pressure. Dominic Mafham returns, alongside new cast members including Jeppe Beck Laursen, Naomi Yang and Tornike Gogrichiani.
