My Repeat Buy: Florence On Cardigans

I take my knitwear collection seriously – it’s the cornerstone of my wardrobe, and cardigans are a year-round staple. They’re not just reserved for the depths of winter; for example, I’ll often pack one for my summer holiday since they’re so versatile. I think that’s why they’re a worthwhile investment.
The cardigan I’ve owned the longest is probably my American Vintage Vitow cardigan. I bought it about five years ago and it quickly cemented American Vintage as one of my go-to brands. The fit is the perfect balance between slouchy and structured – and that’s essential. A cardigan needs to be boxy. It’s a crewneck style, which is so wearable and probably my most-worn. I loved the grey so much I ended up buying it in black too.
Cardigans always look good with a white tee. It has to be thick or long-sleeved – my COS ones are perfect. This isn’t just about practicality; it’s a conscious styling choice. A pop of white breaks up the knit and adds polish to the look. My go-to outfit formula is simple: a white tee, straight-leg blue denim (vintage Levi’s or Agolde), flats (either loafers or ballet flats) and a pair of oval sunnies with a simple bag. There’s an image of Laura Harrier in this exact outfit that I always reference. It’s just such a comfortable, effortless and versatile look.
This season, the style I’ve been reaching for on repeat is a lightweight crewneck cardigan. It’s one of the rare times I’ll break my white tee rule. I’ll wear it solo, almost like a top, paired with tailored trousers for work or my favourite denim at the weekend.
The last cardigan I added to my wardrobe was a cherry red cashmere piece from Soft Goat. I’ve only recently started wearing more colour and this has been a big part of that shift. It felt festive during December but I’m still loving it in January. It’s an investment piece but the quality is worth it – Soft Goat’s seriously soft cashmere really lasts.
For evening, I’m all about the knit bra-and-cardigan combo. I’d pair it with straight-leg denim, barely there sandals and statement earrings. Reformation does this look so well – I’m obsessed with their greige set this season.
On the high street, I recently found the most incredible Khaite-inspired cardigan at H&M. It’s thick, warm and has that classic Khaite silhouette – such a steal. I like to wear it with satin trousers and heels for something more elevated, but it works just as well with jeans and boat shoes.
This navy crewneck cardigan from &Daughter is high on my wish list. I don’t own anything from them yet but, after trying on some of their pieces, I know the quality is exceptional. Another piece I’ve been eyeing is the Zozo cardigan from Almada The Label. It’s chunkier and perfect for the next few months. GAP also has some cosy chunky styles that are great for layering.
I’ve been seeing a lot of mohair and argyle cardigans around recently. Both are great ways to update a classic staple. Argyle has that slightly preppy feel to it, which suits my style. Celine has a great option while &Daughter and Zara both have lovely options at different price points. Mohair is another trend that’s here to stay – I love the styles at Sézane and & Other Stories for something a little more elevated.
When it comes to composition, a wool blend is ideal. I love cashmere but it’s expensive, delicate and requires more care. Investing in a comb for maintenance is essential. Wool blends are more durable and budget friendly. H&M has excellent options, and for affordable cashmere it’s a no-brainer.
Always pay attention to the buttons. Metallic or gold buttons can make a cardigan feel dated. Instead, opt for natural finishes like tortoiseshell – they’re chic and understated.
There are some amazing under-the-radar knitwear brands to check out. A Day’s March, Gobi Cashmere and Kiltane are a few of my current favourites. A Day’s March focuses on menswear but now offers womenswear too – the Soho store is worth a visit. Gobi Cashmere specialises in sustainable Mongolian cashmere that’s incredibly soft. And Kiltane, a Scottish brand, is known for its timeless and well-priced pieces.
On off-duty Sundays, I live in head-to-toe knitwear – a cardigan with knitted trousers is my go-to. I’ll style it with snow boots or trainers, a long coat and a cap. It’s a polished alternative to a tracksuit and one of my favourite looks for travelling.
