A Day In The Life Of Amber Venz Box
I wake up at 6:30am... Having two children under the age of three (with another one on the way) leaves very little time for myself, so I like to wake early. I write out my top three priorities for the day, scroll through the LIKEtoKNOW.it app, and listen to a podcast while I get ready.
The first thing I do is… Have a shower. Showering in the morning immediately gets me energised for the day. For my facial products, I use Biologique Recherche – it makes my skin feel so soft and instantly hydrated. If I am styling my hair, I like to create loose waves with my curling iron (an old school Revlon tong that I’ve had for years) and I finish it off with a lot of Oribe Texturizing Spray. When I’m going into the office, I typically wear minimal makeup – my lash extensions give me the bright-eyed look without having to wear mascara. My last step is my Le Labo The Noir fragrance. I love the smell!
You’d probably be very surprised to hear that I actually don’t own a ton of clothes – instead I tend to buy classics that I know I’ll wear for years to come. The rewardStyle office is casual, but you never know where your day will lead you, so I like to wear something that can take me from day to night, just in case drinks with the rewardStyle team or a business dinner pops up. I also always keep a spare change of shoes in the office, just in case. After I’m dressed, I’ll check my email to make sure nothing urgent has come through.
I wake the kids at 7am… I will sit with Boyce and Birdie whilst they have breakfast. My husband Baxter is the chef in our house, so he usually makes us avocado toast in the morning and we sit as a family.
Baxter and I drop the kids to my mum, who watches them while we are at work, then we start our fifteen-minute commute to the office. Dallas is a driving town and we cherish that extra time together each day. We prioritise our family, so once we get home, all work talk is off limits and we focus our energy and attention on the kids – but once we’re back in the car, the work talk starts flowing.
When I arrive in the office… I will grab a couple of snacks to have on hand for the morning. We have a rewardStyle cafe area, The Early Bird, where we have endless snacks and drinks, all free for our employees.
I designed the interiors of the Dallas office when I was pregnant with Birdie and I couldn’t sleep at night. I spent all my time on Instagram at night. I love decorating with coffee table books, and now my friends and clients are all creating their own books! I have a gallery wall of books, and some of my favourite art is in there.
When Birdie was born, I wasn’t able to take a real maternity leave. We also didn’t have any private spaces at the office. So when we built this new office after she was born, having a beautiful mother's room was a top priority for me. Now we have many expectant mothers, including myself, who love having a private space – it makes the motherhood-to-work transition much more comfortable and convenient. rewardStyle is our second home, and the people on our team are our second family.
At 9am my work day officially starts... I try to keep the first thirty minutes of my day meeting-free so that I can catch up on emails and set my priorities for the day.
My morning typically consists of meetings; I focus on the marketing side of the business. I am constantly thinking about how we can further drive our current products and add new features within the LIKEtoKNOW.it app, to make shopping influencers’ looks even easier to emulate for our users. Sitting in on meetings throughout the day and watching our talented team execute the company’s initiatives and vision is definitely the most rewarding part of my role. These meetings can take place either face-to-face, or via Skype and conference calls, mostly to check in with our global team and agencies.
When lunchtime comes around… I can normally be found at my desk or in a lunch meeting. My favourite place to go is Mattito’s, a Mexican place in our office building. ATaco Salad from there is easy and so delicious! I grab some snacks on the way back to my desk from The Early Bird, usually some fruit or nuts. If I’m in need of a sweet treat, Nerd Ropes are my guilty pleasure…
I try to leave the office by 5:30pm… If we don’t have an evening event (we try to only schedule evening events once or twice a week), after a busy day Baxter & I try to escape by 5:30, allowing us some time with the kids before bedtime. If I have a big trip coming up I will try and leave slightly earlier to ensure I have a bit of extra time at home before a couple of days away.
Our evening is spent the same as most families: getting an update on what the kids have been up to, where Grandma took them during the day, what they saw and learnt. We’ve just built ‘The Little Box Lodge’ in our garden, so we have been spending a lot of time outside recently- this was a very exciting project.
Baxter will start to make dinner; this can be anything from salads during the hot summer months to family classics such as chilli or fajitas. The bedtime routine for Birdie and Boyce isn’t long after dinner: bath, story and then bed.
After the kids are asleep Baxter and I will catch up on our favourite series, or I will use this time to shoot some blog imagery and write the copy. Around 9pm I start to get tired – I’m in the final months of my third pregnancy, so long days take their toll. I jump into bed, quickly check my emails for anything urgent and then fall fast asleep.
