BEST FOR: A Complete Overhaul

SHA Mexico

Founder of SHA, Alfredo Bataller, cured his own chronic illness through diet and naturopathy, which led to him to set up his first wellness clinic near Alicante in Spain 15 years ago. This month sees the first phase of SHA’s global expansion with the opening of a clinic in Mexico in the eastern part of the Yucatán Peninsula, overlooking the sea and with its own stretch of white sand beach. You’ll be able to choose between four programmes, ranging from four to 21 days: Rebalance & Reenergise; Detox & Optimal Weight; Well-Ageing & Prevention; and Leader’s Performance. Each will be personalised to meet your needs and goals, and will include healthy nutrition, preventive ageing, holistic medicine, cognitive stimulation, advanced preventive diagnostics, wellbeing and inner balance, physical performance, all of which together have become known as the SHA Method. A lot of thought has gone into the architecture of the ultra-modern building which blends seamlessly with the green of the mangroves and the blue of the Caribbean Sea. There are 35 residences and 100 ocean-front rooms and suites, each with private balconies and sea views. The food follows SHA Nutrition and is based on a healthy and balanced, mainly alkaline, diet using local organic and seasonal foods. Menus are curated to the needs of each guest and their goals.

BEST FOR: A Spiritual Escape

Raffles Bali

Bali has always been a popular destination for those seeking a spiritual experience, and Raffles Bali is the first in the hotel group to launch ‘Retreat by Raffles’. If you’re after some pampering while improving your mental and physical health too,  this new wellbeing programme promises a rejuvenating and relaxing itinerary, and will be co-ordinated by your personal wellbeing butler who is available to you 24 hours a day. Expect yoga, meditation, hypnotherapy, Chakra balancing and Reiki, all by Balinese born and bred practitioners. There will also be healthy cooking demonstrations and a farm to table experience in the resort’s extensive botanical gardens, as well as relaxing spa treatments. The 32 luxe ocean-facing villas are decorated with batik fabrics and rattan furniture, and all have spacious bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, private gardens and sun decks. The resort also boasts a lovely beachfront infinity pool, a fitness centre, tennis courts and jogging trails. Some of us would come here for the food alone – the restaurant, Rumari, is overseen by chef Gaetan Biesuz who creates south-east Asian cuisine with authentic bold flavours. Most of the produce is sourced from farmers across the Indonesian archipelago, while many of the herbs, fruits and vegetables are grown in the resort’s own gardens. The wine list is impressive too.

BEST FOR: A Body & Mind Reset

Vivamayr Maria Wörth

Chat about our gut bacteria has gone mainstream over the last few years as scientists promise that looking after them promotes better health, weight loss and a longer life. But the concept is not new. Back in the 1920s, Austrian doctor Franz Xaver Mayr was already focusing on gut health and digestion and believed that our intestines were at the root of our physical and mental health. His principles are still being used at the health resorts named after him, including Vivamayr Maria Wörth, overlooking Lake Wörthersee, which has just undergone a total refurb of its interiors. Here, healing is rooted in digestive health and the microbiome, with every stay individually tailored to you. New, too, for 2024 are two programmes with a focus on immune system support, which is especially relevant with the increased prevalence of respiratory illnesses since the pandemic. Be warned, the programmes here are rigorous, with daily medical treatments, movement therapy and lab tests all complemented by an alkaline-focused diet that aims to reduce acidity and support healthy digestion. But the good news is that you are surrounded by a beautiful landscape and, after the hardship of the initial detox, you’ll leave feeling revived. Or if you’re short on time, book into the day clinic in London which offers a range of treatments including a mineral infusion, vitamin C infusion and oxygen therapy, all tailored to specifically suit your needs.
