To keep your skin fresh and glowy this winter, SheerLuxe Beauty Contributor Adeola Gboyega says it’s important to make the right changes to your routine – specifically, choosing nourishing and hydrating formulas and focusing on protecting your natural barrier. Change Your Cleansing Routine

One of the best things you can do for your skin during the colder months is to switch to a hydrating cleanser. Lightweight foaming cleansers are best in the summer, when our skin is on the oiler side, but at this time of year, there are so many formulas to choose from that will protect the skin barrier. With that in mind, opt for cleansing balms, creams and oils to keep your skin at its happiest.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate

Cold weather and central heating can cause our skin to feel drier than normal which, in turn, can leave your complexion looking dull. One of the best ways to tackle this issue is to exfoliate at least once a week – sometimes more, depending on whether you do so already. This will help to remove any build-up of dead skin cells and reveal healthy, smooth skin underneath. It’ll also allow your serums and moisturisers to work more effectively, putting you firmly on the path to glowing skin.

Don’t Forget About Ceramides

If there is one skincare ingredient everyone should include in their skincare routine, it would be ceramides – also known as the building blocks in your skin. More specifically, they’re fatty acids which occur naturally in the skin, and which also maintain your skin barrier by retaining moisture and hydration. When our skin is exposed to harsh weather conditions, this can negatively affect the ceramides in our skin, so it’s important to use ceramides in your skincare routine to maintain that hydration and help it withstand harsher conditions.

Incorporate A Facial Oil

Our skin looks its most radiant in summer a because it produces more oil in the heat. In the winter, the weather has the opposite effect, so it’s a good idea to add a facial oil into your routine. It doesn’t have to be a thick oil – the latest formulations are lightweight enough to be used even on oily skin – just incorporate it into your night-time routine after cleansing or mix it in with your moisturiser a couple of times a week for best results.

Take Supplements

Healthy skin doesn’t just come down to skincare, it also has a lot to do with what’s going on inside your body, too. I’m a big believer in nourishing your skin from the inside out with the right supplements. Certain ones are essential for maintaining your glow – such as Omgea-3, collagen and vitamin D. All of them can contribute to healthier skin – especially when there’s a distinct lack of light or warmth in the air.

Book In For Treatments

Booking in for a professional treatment is a great way to give your skin a boost, but more importantly, a skincare expert will be able to analyse your complexions and recommend the right products and treatments. You can also ask for advice on specific concerns, such as dehydration, pigmentation and fine lines. Something like a chemical peel is perfect for this time of year when the sun isn’t out as often, especially if pigmentation is an issue. Also, a facial such as the Aquagold® Fine Touch can deliver vitamins and antioxidants deep down into the skin to provide some additional protection.
