Our New Obsession: IGTV
IGTV is available to download for free as a standalone app, or you can view videos on Instagram itself by tapping the IGTV icon on someone’s profile. Most exciting (albeit slightly worrying, considering how much time we already spend on our phones) is the fact the videos are all vertical – meaning they’re designed to be watched on phones, no screen flipping required. Unlike Instagram video posts and Instagram Stories, each IGTV video can be up to an hour long.
Many of the world’s biggest ‘grammers have set up channels already, including Kim Kardashian West and the Insta-famous dog Jiffpom. And whether it’s comedy skits, DIY projects or hairstyle guides from your favourite accounts (head to @SheerLuxe to see our Fashion Editor Charlotte’s tonging tutorial in action) there’s already something up there for everyone.
The standalone app is pretty swish too. Just like turning on your television, IGTV starts playing as soon as you open the app. You don’t have to search to start watching either – connect it to your Instagram account and it will automatically show you content from people you already follow and others you might like based on your interests. You can swipe up to discover more — switch between ‘For You’, ‘Following’, ‘Popular’ and ‘Continue Watching’ tabs. You can also like, comment and send videos to friends in ‘Direct’.
Fancy a taste of IGTV stardom for yourself? Channels aren’t exclusive to influencers and brands – according to Instagram, “anyone can be a creator”. Simply upload your own IGTV videos in the standalone app or online to start your own. Watch out YouTube…
