The Athenaeum, Mayfair
The Athenaeum has unveiled two new View Suites, created from the hotel’s former top-floor guest lounge. Overlooking Green Park, the spacious suites make the most of the hotel’s longstanding connection with the park, with sweeping views across the treetops offering an unexpected sense of the outdoors in the centre of London. Interiors strike a balance between the building’s art-deco heritage and a softer, more residential feel, with contemporary details bringing a fresh perspective to the historic property. Claridge’s: Queen of Hotels, Hotel of Kings
One of London’s most iconic hotels has announced the publication of its first-ever book. Claridge’s: Queen of Hotels, Hotel of Kings offers an authorised account of how it became one of the world’s most celebrated hotels. Written by historian Martin Williams, the book draws on unprecedented access to Claridge’s archives to explore its history from its beginnings in 1812 to its place at the centre of modern London life. Expect plenty of glamour, famous names and behind-the-scenes stories, alongside an insight into how the hotel has continually reinvented itself while maintaining its reputation for traditional British hospitality. Over the years, Claridge’s has welcomed royalty, celebrities and some of the world’s most influential figures – and the book brings these chapters together to tell the story of a London landmark that has become almost as famous for its clientele as it is for its interiors and service. The book is available to preorder now.

RESTAURANTS & BARS
Venus Bar at Brasserie Olivia, Chelsea
Brasserie Olivia is taking its French Riviera-inspired dining experience into the evening with the opening of Venus Bar on 9th October. Hidden downstairs via the Sloane Square brasserie’s grand wooden staircase, the new speakeasy-style bar will swap the restaurant’s light Riviera mood for something more 1970s-inspired. Designed by B3 Designers, the space features warm oak panelling, antique objects sourced from French markets, vintage vinyl and chartreuse velvet chairs, while a chrome bar takes centre stage. The music collection spans French female singers from the 1940s to the 1980s, rock and classical, with guests able to choose what’s played. Cocktails, created under the guidance of bartender Jennifer Le Nechet, take an experimental approach, from a cucumber and gin milk punch to a tomato-infused negroni. There will also be around 75 French wines, alongside brasserie snacks including oysters and gougères.

Nettle, Covent Garden
Nettle is the new London restaurant from chef, farmer and Acre founder Will Devlin. Set on the fifth-floor rooftop of The Conduit in Covent Garden, it combines skyline views with an open-air garden and a fire kitchen centred around a custom-built charcoal grill. The menu follows Devlin’s farm-to-table approach, with much of the produce coming from his farm and Block Butchery at Spratsbourne Farm in Kent. Expect seasonal, fire-cooked dishes across snacks, small plates, larger dishes and sharing plates, with meat sourced through the restaurant’s whole-animal approach and responsibly caught British seafood. Dishes include Acre charcuterie, hake croquettes, wild rabbit skewers, wild venison and Kent lamb, alongside plenty of vegetables treated as a main event rather than an afterthought.

Dockley Road, Bermondsey
Tucked into the south-west corner of Spa Terminus, Dockley Road is a neighbourhood restaurant, café and bar built around the produce and specialist suppliers of Bermondsey’s food district. The menu changes almost daily, shaped by what’s available from the surrounding butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, cheesemongers and wine merchants. The cooking is broadly British and European, with a focus on simple dishes that let good ingredients do the work. There’s also a strong whole-animal approach, with beef used nose-to-tail across steaks, burgers, pies, braises and ragu. Recent dishes include roast cod with Provençal vegetables and Dillay Dexter ragu with pappardelle, while weekend breakfast brings Turkish eggs, scallop and bacon baps and smoked haddock kedgeree.

The Emory Rooftop Bar, Knightsbridge
The Emory’s rooftop bar has unveiled The View, a new cocktail menu inspired by the London landmarks visible from its spectacular 360º vantage point. Created in collaboration with renowned Argentinian bartender Renato ‘Tato’ Giovannoni, the menu brings together Argentine ingredients, spirits and flavours with the bar team’s own contemporary approach. A total of 12 signature cocktails have been designed around different perspectives of the capital, with familiar classics reworked in increasingly unexpected ways. The Alignment, for example, takes its cue from a French 75, combining Renais Gin, passion berries, Champagne and tropical fruit cordial, while The Layer is a Paloma-style drink made with Mijenta Reposado Tequila, pimentón de cachi, corn and grapefruit.

Celeste, Notting Hill
Celeste is the third property from the team behind Estelle Manor, bringing a private members’ club to Notting Hill with an all-day Italian-American restaurant at its centre. Members have access to all four floors of the Notting Hill townhouse, with plenty to discover beyond the restaurant. Upstairs, the Members’ Bar provides a more intimate setting for drinks, while a Japanese restaurant adds another dining option. There are also private spaces designed to work equally well for a few hours of quiet work during the day or drinks and gatherings in the evening. The ground floor is open to everyone, with an al fresco terrace for morning coffee, an elegant bar and a light-filled dining room offering both counter seating and generous tables. We like the pretty Courtyard at the back of the restaurant. Menu highlights include king crab tagliolini, nettle and ricotta bottoni, and a caesar wedge salad.

Alba, Knightsbridge
Harrods has a new dining hotspot. Ten-seat omakase restaurant Alba is putting the focus firmly on the quality of its ingredients. Drawing on the Japanese and Italian appreciation for sea urchin – known as uni in Japan and ricci di mare in Italy – the experience, which is led by head chef Takuya Kaneko of Zuma, celebrates seafood at its freshest. Expect hand-selected uni, otoro, caviar and the day’s catch, served course by course directly in front of you. There’s no set menu to consult in advance: instead, dishes are dictated by what the sea has delivered that morning and the chef’s judgement on how best to serve it.
