TUNE INTO A NEW PODCAST: The Drop Out

This new podcast tells the unbelievable story of Elizabeth Holmes, a former American businesswoman who scammed millions of dollars out of investors for her so-called pharmaceutical company, Theranos. But how did the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire heralded as ‘the next Steve Jobs’ lose it all in the blink of an eye? How did she find herself facing criminal charges — to which she pleaded not guilty — and up to decades in prison? How did her technology, meant to revolutionise health care in the US, potentially put millions of patients at risk? And how did so many people along the way get it so wrong? Presented by ABC news, you’ll hear about the investigation via former employees, investors, patients, and for the first-time, the deposition testimony of Elizabeth Holmes herself.

BOOK AHEAD FOR THIS: Fortnum & Mason Supper Clubs

Regular SL readers will know how much we love Fortnum & Mason, so we were very excited to hear they’ve created a new series of supper clubs featuring some of the country’s top chefs and up-and-coming culinary talent. Hosted by food critic William Sitwell (of MasterChef fame) there’s a different menu on offer each month. There’s a tasting menu from chef Mike Robinson at the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon on Wednesday 10th November. Menus are strictly under wraps, but if Fortnum’s recent jazz evenings are anything to go by, we’re expecting good things. Tickets cost £95pp.

BOOK DINNER HERE: Isla, The Standard

A night at The Standard hotel is always a good idea, so we were pleased to hear that its restaurant, Isla, is returning to the ground floor with a new menu, drinks list, and garden terrace. Diners can choose from a new menu of seasonal dishes, with a particular emphasis on seafood, like scallops with and mussels, Koji grilled chicken, aged feta and sesame, whole lemon sole with seaweed butter and Ikejime trout with salsa verde. Order poached pineapple with bread ice-cream for dessert and be sure to try one of the new cocktails – we like the sound of the extra spicy margarita.

WATCH THIS NEW DOC: Subnormal: A British Scandal

A new documentary which has just landed on Amazon Prime, Subnormal examines one of the biggest scandals in the history of British education: how Black children in the 1960s-70s were disproportionately sent to schools for the so-called ‘educationally subnormal.’ With moving recounts from a range of those directly affected and people who sought to overthrow the system, the documentary recounts how Black parents, teachers and activists banded together to expose the injustice and force the education system to change. An interesting and important watch, particularly in the wake of last year’s BLM movement.

ENJOY GREAT PASTA: Pastaio, Carnaby Street

Covent Garden restaurant Pastaio has created a new menu slushie menu, inspired by the favourite cocktails from some of Soho's coolest neighbouring bars, including Quo Vadis, El Pastor and Golden Gai. Available until mid-October, there’s a new drink on offer every couple of weeks, like pina coladas and spiced mango margaritas, as well as tasty pasta dishes and antipasti sides – we loved the burrata and peach salad. Be sure to order tiramisu or pistachio ice-cream for dessert.
