VISIT THIS NEW EXHIBITION: Windrush Day, Brixton Village

Tuesday marked Windrush Day, commemorating 73 years since the SS Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks, carrying over 1,000 Caribbean migrants to the UK. To mark the anniversary, Brixton Village has teamed up with arts organisation The Brixton Project for a series of cultural events taking place today until Monday 28th June. Head down to Briton Village to see The Portrait Parlour, an interactive installation inspired by the work of renowned photographer Harry Jacobs who captured iconic portraits of Caribbean people during the 60s and 70s. Plus, on Saturday 26th June from 11am, Quincy the Comedian and playwright Judy Hepburn will perform a reading of their new book, The Place for Me: Stories About The Windrush Generation, at Windrush Square in Brixton, followed by a Q&A session, suitable for both children and adults. If you’re after a last-minute reservation, The Acai Girls are hosting a supper club at Morena in Eccleston Yards, Belgravia tonight. Mexican chef Adriana Cavita has just started her first solo UK residency on the roof of The Dorchester. Showcasing her signature style of tasty Mexican food cooked over fire, the residency will be a chance for Adriana to try out new dishes for her London restaurant which is set to open later this year. Starters include citrus ceviche and a tuna tostada, while the main courses celebrate Mexican street food, with dishes like cochinita tacos and tetela (a pocket of corn filled with pink fir potato); salsa tatemada and Glastonbury cheese; dry aged ribeye steak; and crispy fried lobster with avocado, tomato salsa and black beans. This Sunday, London City Island launches the Islander Festival with a series of outdoor screenings. To celebrate Pride Month, Backyard Cinema is showcasing ten of the most iconic LGBTQ+ movies this weekend and throughout July at Capital Studios in Wandsworth.
