Maid, Netflix

Inspired by the New York Times best-selling memoir, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land, Maid follows the story of Alex, a single mother who turns to housecleaning to – just about – make ends meet as she escapes an abusive relationship and overcomes homelessness to create a better life for her daughter, Maddy. Seen through the emotional yet humorous lens of a desperate but determined woman, this series is a raw and inspiring exploration of a mother’s resilience.

Bad Sport, Netflix

Bad Sport looks at six unbelievable stories at the intersection of sports and crime, as told by the athletes, coaches and law enforcement officials at the centre of the controversies. Episodes include the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic figure skating scandal; superstar Indycar driver Randy Lanier’s marijuana-smuggling operation; the Arizona State University basketball point-shaving scheme; the horse hitman at the centre of an insurance fraud ring; Calciopoli, the biggest match-fixing scandal in Italian football history; and South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje’s tragic fall from grace.

Pretty Smart, Netflix

After getting unexpectedly dumped by her boyfriend, Chelsea (Emily Osment) – a Harvard-educated intellectual and aspiring novelist – is forced to move in with her bubbly, carefree, not-so-intellectual West Coast sister Claire (Olivia Macklin) and her three eccentric roommates: Grant (Gregg Sulkin), a distractingly handsome personal trainer, Solana (Cinthya Carmon), a former lawyer turned healer, and Jayden (Michael Hsu Rosen), a social media influencer. But Chelsea’s tough, sometimes judgemental exterior starts to soften as she gets to know her new friends.

You – Series 3, Netflix

In series three, Joe and Love, now married and raising their baby, have moved to the Northern California enclave of Madre Linda, where they’re surrounded by privileged tech entrepreneurs, judgmental ‘mom’ bloggers, and Insta-famous biohackers. Joe is committed to his new role as a husband and dad but fears Love’s lethal impulsiveness. Breaking out of a cage in a basement is one thing. But the prison of a picture-perfect marriage to a woman who’s wise to your tricks? That’ll prove a much more complicated escape.

Colin In Black & White, Netflix 

From co-creators Ava DuVernay and Colin Kaepernick comes Colin In Black & White, a bold limited series that chronicles Kaepernick’s coming-of-age story, tackling the obstacles of race, class and culture as the Black adopted child of a white family. The series stars Jaden Michael as young Colin before reaching the highest levels of American football as an NFL quarterback and becoming a cultural icon and activist; Nick Offerman and Mary-Louise Parker as his well-meaning parents Rick and Teresa; and Colin Kaepernick himself, who appears as the present-day narrator of his own story, guiding viewers through an array of historical and contemporary contextual moments.

Hip Hop Uncovered, Disney+

Hip Hop Uncovered is an examination of a dying breed of power brokers who operate from the shadows of hip-hop. Set against 40 years of music history, this six-part documentary series takes a deep dive into the paradox of America's criminalisation of the genre and its fascination with the street culture that created it and still exists within it. Instead of telling the story of hip-hop from the top down, Hip Hop Uncovered tells the story from the streets up, as it reveals the untold story of how America's streets helped shape hip-hop culture from an expression of survival and defiance into one of music's most dominant genres.

Among The Stars, Disney+

Among The Stars is a six-part docuseries with fly-on-the-wall access into the vast world of Nasa. The series starts with astronaut Captain Chris Cassidy on a quest to get back in his space suit for one last mission – to fly to The International Space Station and help find the origins of the universe, but this quickly becomes a tale of the wider team at Nasa, their roles on this mission and collective quest to succeed. With cameras stationed on both Earth and the International Space Station, using intimate footage, personal video diaries and livestream footage, viewers are embedded with Cassidy and the team of engineers, flight controllers and specialists who take on missions risking life, limb and reputation for the greater good of humankind.

Succession – Series 3, Now

It’s the series half the office has been waiting for: Succession series three is almost here. Ambushed by his rebellious son Kendall, Logan Roy begins this season in a perilous position, scrambling to secure familial, political and financial alliances.
