There are plenty of exciting TV and film releases to see you through the next month. With a variety of new picks across Netflix, Now, Disney+, Apple TV and Prime Video, here’s what to add to your July watch list.

Sophie: A Murder In West Cork, Netflix

This three-part series examines one of Ireland’s most famous murder cases, the death of French producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier in the town of Schull, West Cork in 1996. The brutal murder, which shocked the country, triggered one of the biggest murder investigations Ireland had ever seen and became a national obsession. This documentary charts the circumstances of her death, unravelling the extraordinary story from its beginning, 24 years ago, to the present day. With exclusive access to Toscan du Plantier’s family, the series brings together, for the first time, the views of her family with Ian Bailey, the man at the centre of the investigation.

Physical, Apple TV

Set in the idyllic beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego, Physical is a dark comedy following Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne), a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. Audible, Netflix

Audible is an immersive coming-of-age documentary following Maryland School for the Deaf high school athlete Amaree McKenstry and his close friends as they face the pressures of senior year and grapple with the realities of venturing into the hearing world. Amaree and his teammates take out their frustrations on the football field as they battle to protect an unprecedented winning streak, while coming to terms with the tragic loss of a close friend. This is a story about young adults who stand up to adversity and face conflict, but always approach the future with hope.

Dracula, Netflix

Netflix is now streaming the BBC’s gruesome 2019 hit, Dracula. Developed by Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat and based on the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker, the three-episode series stars Danish actor Claes Bang (The Square, The Girl In The Spider’s Web) as the title character. We think Moffat describes him best: “He has it all. Brilliant, gorgeous, charismatic, lethal. Tall, dark and gruesome all at once.”

Heist, Netflix

This new Netflix documentary chronicles three of the biggest heists in modern American history, as explained by the people who pulled them off. A 21-year-old woman steals millions in Vegas casino cash. An aspiring father swipes a fortune from the Miami airport – and uses TV shows to learn how to get away with it. And a Kentucky dad is accused of one of the biggest whiskey burglaries in history. Using dynamic re-enactments, original interviews, and a fast-paced style akin to the likes of Ocean’s Eleven, this series will satisfy fans of true crime and Hollywood capers alike.

This Netflix Original has already become a hit following its launch on 1st July. This story of a love triangle between a woman, her husband and her past takes a provocative new look at female identity and desire. Run, Netflix

Run is set to launch on Netflix later this month. There’s something unnatural, even sinister about the relationship between teenager Chloe (newcomer Kiera Allen) and her mother, Diane (Sarah Paulson). Diane has raised her daughter in total isolation, controlling every move she’s made since birth, and there are secrets that Chloe's only beginning to grasp. Forbidden from even seeing the mail, she soon starts suspecting her mother of keeping things hidden from her and decides to investigate.

The Godfather of Harlem – Series 2, Prime Video

If you’re after a gritty crime drama, check this out. It's 1964 and Bumpy Johnson (Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker) is battling the New York crime families for control of the lucrative and murderous ‘French Connection’, the heroin pipeline that runs from Marseilles to New York Harbour. With a distribution syndicate that includes Black crime bosses from other major US cities, Bumpy takes a cue from his friend Malcolm X’s (Nigél Thatch) message of Black economic nationalism. His ambitious plan will face challenges from not only the Italians but his wife Mayme (Ilfenesh Hadera), daughter Elise (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy), rival Adam Clayton Powell (Giancarlo Esposito), prosecutor Robert Morgenthau (Justin Bartha) and even Malcolm himself.

Knives Out, Prime Video

 

Writer and director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, The Last Jedi) pays tribute to Agatha Christie in Knives Out, a fun, modern-day murder mystery in which everyone is a suspect. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through the red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death. Originally scheduled for a 2020 release, this Marvel Studios spinoff is set to land in cinemas and on Disney+ this month. birth, the Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanova) is given to the KGB, which grooms her to become its ultimate operative. When the USSR breaks up, the government tries to kill her as the action moves to present-day New York, where she is a freelance operative. Starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz and Robert Downey Jr.
