What To Do This Weekend 18.04.24

Looking for things to do this weekend? Look no further – from a ceramics workshop to a cool chef’s residency, our guide has options for everyone…

Circular Groove Pop Up

Circular Groove is a must-know for those in search of archival fashion pieces. For the first time, the online resale platform has come to life as a concept pop-up where you’ll spot an archive John Galliano corset dress, like one worn by Amy Winehouse, as well as a neatly crafted pleated skirt from Comme des Garçons, and accessories from Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Loewe and Christian Dior. You can pop in at any time but, to celebrate the end of the pop-up run, Circular Groove will be hosting an intimate evening with a live jazz performance by Guildhall students on 21st April.

Minority Report

The Lyric is known for its well-thought-out indie plays, and the latest in line is a new stage adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s dystopian thriller, Minority Report. Popularised by Spielberg’s 2002 sci-fi movie starring Tom Cruise, the novella envisions a future in which criminals are arrested before they commit crimes thanks to apparently scrupulous telepaths called ‘Precogs’. Director David Haig (CobraThe Thin Blue Line) is taking things in a new direction while staying close to the main theme of the book: the debate of free will versus determinism.

Lyric Square, King Street, Hammersmith, W6 0QL; 20th April-18th May

Ceramic Handbuilding Workshop

Pophams has a new workshop space next door to its London Fields bakery. In conjunction with several artists across the UK, it’s launched a spring series of events. There will be evening and afternoon sessions to learn new skills, while enjoying pastries and drinks from the nearby eatery. Led by Izzy Letty, a south London potter, tonight’s ceramic workshop focuses on pottery handbuilding techniques. Attendees can create their own ceramic candlestick holders and trinket dishes, which will be fired in Izzy's kiln and ready for collection at the Hackney shop in two weeks. Tickets are £65 – if you can’t make this one, there are plenty more coming up.

L’Abysse x Pavyllon London

Yannick Alléno is bringing his Paris restaurant L’Abysse to his Michelin-starred outpost in the Four Seasons Park Lane later this month. Pavyllon London will host a one-of-a-kind omakase dining experience headed up by sushi master Yasunari Okazaki. It will be an intimate affair, taking place at the eight-seater bar counter in Pavyllon’s private dining room. The multi-course menu will feature signature L’Abysse dishes like panko-crust sea urchin with grapefruit; French sake katsu scallop tartare; and hand-shaped nigiri. This is an elite experience with prices to match: for lunch or dinner, the omakase menu is £390pp, with a sake, wine and tea pairing for another £200 a head.

London Marathon

One of the capital’s biggest sporting events is coming up this Sunday. The 26.2 mile London Marathon route will pass some of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks – including Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, The Tower Of London, The London Eye, Big Ben, and of course, Buckingham Palace. Even if you’re not running, the race is one of the best spectator events of the year – and there are plenty of great pubs along the way.

Oranj is hosting another notable chef in its Shoreditch warehouse. Evelyn Aloupas’s three Michelin-starred Smyth in Chicago has been lauded by Jeremy Allan White as an inspiration for season 2 of The Bear. You’ve only got just over a week left to try Evelyn’s menu, which features dishes like roasted red beets with black garlic and horseradish-cashew butter; mussels with kohlrabi in a brown butter broth; and scallops in a rice koji allium broth paired with spring peas and dill.
