HOTELS

The Shepherd, Mayfair

Opening on 1st September, The Shepherd is one of London's most anticipated boutique hotel launches. In Shepherd Market, the property occupies one of Mayfair's oldest sites, where a shepherd's cottage once stood. That rich history runs throughout the hotel, from its thoughtfully restored architecture to its thoughtful interiors, which balance heritage details with contemporary design. Guests can expect a neighbourhood feel alongside beautifully appointed rooms and warm, understated service. Fayre, the hotel’s all-day restaurant, is inspired by the great dining rooms of London. Serving seasonal British dishes from breakfast through to dinner, the menu features elevated classics, including citrus-cured trout, Gloucester Old Spot pork chop, dry-aged steaks and a beef Wellington pithivier. Interiors will feature bespoke artwork by Adam Ellis, rich berry-toned banquettes and dark timber panelling.

RESTAURANTS

Zylia, Covent Garden

Zylia is a new Greek-Cypriot taverna from Nick Molyviatis (Singburi, Kiln and Oma/Agora) and Barry Karacostas. Inspired by Nick’s upbringing in Athens and Barry’s Cypriot heritage, the restaurant celebrates the shared traditions – and distinct flavours – of both cuisines. A charcoal grill turns out everything from Cypriot sheftalia (caul fat-wrapped pork parcels with onion, parsley and sumac) and classic pork and chicken souvlaki to grilled Ibaiama pork chop with fennel and olive relish. Larger plates include roast cod fricassee with herbs, slow-cooked lamb kleftiko and Greek-style lamb chops served with olive oil chips. An all-Greek wine list sits alongside Cypriot and Greek beers – ideal for anyone craving a slice of holiday sunshine in London.

Kismet, Borough Market

Launched above The Globe Tavern in Borough Market, Kismet is the latest venture from restaurateur Dom Hamdy (Bistro Freddie, Crispin and Canal) and chef Keiran Mustafa, formerly of BiBi and The Harwood Arms. Inspired by the traditional ‘meyhane’ social spaces of Istanbul and Northern Cyprus, the year-long residency will focus on generous meze (make sure to order the ‘atom’ buffalo-milk yoghurt with chilli butter), mangal-grilled kebabs and sharing-style feasting, available as either a set menu or à la carte. Drinks centre on Turkish wines and raki, while the interiors channel the convivial atmosphere of a classic meyhane with dark timber, lace curtains and low lighting. Weekly live Turkish music completes the experience.

Bar Blondie, Queen's Park

Bar Blondie brings a slice of southern European wine bar culture to Queen's Park with a relaxed all-day space combining thoughtful food, excellent wines and a packed cultural programme. The 60-bin list, curated by award-winning sommelier Alex Price, one of Bar Blondie’s co-founders, champions low-intervention producers and terroir-led bottles, while head chef Alastair Walling's menu takes inspiration from Italy and the South of France. Expect dishes such as bluefin tuna with stracciatella, handmade agnolotti with lamb genovese and monkfish cooked on the plancha with mussels and samphire. Beyond the kitchen, there will also be a programme of DJs, live music, poetry evenings, chess nights and themed talks. We also like the fact it’s a 21+ venue.

The intimate 24-cover dining room sits beside an open kitchen lined with herbs and fermenting jars, while a productive garden supplies flowers, herbs and vegetables for the menu. From September, a handcrafted oak wine bar will serve low-intervention wines alongside seasonal cocktails and snacks including Lindisfarne oysters and Craster kippers.

Johnny Boy’s, Stoke Newington

Johnny Boy's is LA-native Julian Denis's tribute to the family-run neighbourhood joints of southern California – the everyday spots that have anchored immigrant communities. Denis, who’s also behind Facing Heaven and Easy 8 in London Fields, has taken over an old Thai café in Stoke Newington and reworked it into a bright, colourful space with Formica tables and cosy booths. Open for dinner Wednesday to Sunday, plus weekend breakfast and lunch, its dinner highlights include crab tostada with pea salsa and carrot escabeche, a pastrami dip with mustard pickles, and a patty melt with russian dressing on rye.

Café Clement, Strand

St Clement has started to launch in stages at 180 The Thames. First up in Soho House founder Nick Jones’s mega project is Café Clement, an all-day space with chef Danny Bohan leading the kitchen. Danny’s menu is rooted in 25 years of cooking alongside Rowley Leigh, Rose Gray and Ruthie Rogers, including 12 years as head chef at the River Café. We can confirm its south-facing terrace and garden square are both lovely settings in which to enjoy his lobster omelette. Meanwhile, Bobbi’s Bar is now open until 3am. Lunette (the newest restaurant from Florence Knight), a health club and pool, all the hotel bedrooms and a dedicated Alex Eagle store (she’s responsible for the hotel’s striking design) will open in September.
