A Night With The SL Team & Friends To Mark Ramadan

This week, the SL team hosted a special Iftar dinner at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair to mark Ramadan. Bringing together inspiring women and friends of SL, it was a chance to break fast together and celebrate Muslim Heritage Month. From the guests to the outfits, here’s what we got up to…

On Tuesday evening, the SL team welcomed guests to a private dining room at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair to mark the beginning of Ramadan. The special event was co-hosted with Shaista Gohir. Baroness Gohir is a member of the House of Lords and the CEO of Muslim Women Network UK, a charity that aims to improve the lives of Muslim women and girls through social justice and equality.

This year, Ramadan falls during the inaugural Muslim Heritage Month, making it an especially important time for reflection and a chance to pay homage to inspiring Muslim people in the community. Created by the Muslim Women Network, the month aims to highlight the valuable contributions and rich culture of Muslims in Britain. It's about challenging negative stereotypes, promoting better understanding, and encouraging more empathy and inclusion for Muslim communities in society.

It was an inspiring evening – and a chance for women from various backgrounds and heritages to connect with one another and mark Ramadan, one of the most important months in the Muslim calendar. Ramadan is a holy month observed by Muslims around the world, marked by fasting from dawn to sunset. It’s a time for prayer, spiritual reflection and growth, as well as a chance to donate to various charities. Guests also shared their experiences working in various sectors across the UK and beyond, from entertainment and content creation to law, aerospace engineering and AI.

BARONESS SHAISTA invited us to be one of a handful of businesses to host an event to share positive stories about the Muslim community and celebrate women from diverse backgrounds. IT WAS A CHANCE TO HIGHLIGHT OUR SHARED VALUES AND THERE WAS A STRONG SENSE OF SISTERHOOD, with people from different heritages coming together – it felt truly special.

Before guests broke their fast with dates and water, artist Nusaiba Mohammad-Timol led a short recital of the Quran. Nusaiba is a reciter who encourages and teaches other women how to recite the Quran. Guests had access to a prayer room for the maghrib prayer (performed after sunset), before sitting down to a selection of sharing dishes from restaurant, Akira Back. The menu included the restaurant’s signature ‘AB tuna pizza’ as well light plates of sashimi, miso black cod, jidori chicken and rock shrimp, alongside a selection of vegetarian sides.

I’m so pleased that SheerLuxe was one of the first organisations to show solidarity and mark MUSLIM HERITAGE MONTH with an Iftar dinner during Ramadan. It brought together INCREDIBLE WOMEN from different faiths, ethnicities and work sectors. The storytelling about career journeys was powerful, and the event felt even more special, coinciding with WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH.
