ClassPass

An OG on the capital’s fitness scene, ClassPass gives you worldwide access to thousands of top-rated gyms and fitness studios in line with your budget. If you like to mix up your workouts with Pilates, spin, HIIT, reformer classes and more, ClassPass is worth considering, especially as your first month is free. The free trial month gives you 50 credits, which you can use on any classes listed on the app – the number of credits a class costs varies between gyms and locations, but you can expect to ‘pay’ three credits for a yoga class and six for a spin class. Once your trial is up, plans start from £15 per month. If you’re heading off on holiday or having a busy month at work and can’t make it to the gym, you can roll your credits over, too.

An Australian franchise, there are over 250+ Jetts gyms worldwide, including several in London, all of which offer state-of-the-art equipment, capped membership to avoid overcrowding and a full class timetable with over 120 classes per month. The gyms are also open 24 hours, enabling you to work out according to your schedule, and there are PTs on the gym floor at all times. From £49.95 per month, there’s no minimum commitment required.

The Gym Group x Fiit

The Gym Group has been leading the way on London’s low-cost gym scene since 2008. Now it’s joined forces with the app Fiit to offer members a new, versatile and effective way to sculpt and tone. Membership to any The Gym Group studio – starting from £19.99 per month, depending on your location – now includes access to Fiit premium, giving you access to over 1,000 virtual classes from expert trainers that can be used on-demand in the gym, at home or on the move. With classes ranging from ten to 60 minutes, and across HIIT, strength, treadmill and the rower, there’s something for everyone, while a choice of training plans will help you achieve your goals.

John Reed

A stone’s throw from Liverpool Street station, John Reed is one of the capital’s newest and coolest gyms. Unlike your average gym chain, John Reed is also a club with live music from London’s favourite DJs – live sets take place every Tuesday and Thursday. Prices are slightly more than other gyms on this list, but it’s reflected in the quality of classes – think boxing, barre, hot yoga, Pilates and more – as well as the facilities and PTs. Set over two floors, expect a relaxed, members club vibe as well as Finnish saunas, showers and towel service. Membership starts from £100 per month and gives you access to clubs in Berlin, LA and Istanbul, too.

Topnotch

Despite its central location – in the heart of Soho – Topnotch is a surprisingly affordable option. Having opened a couple of weeks ago, the new gym space is clean and modern with a great range of classes, including HIIT, spinning and circuits. Memberships are as flexible as they come – choose from short-term, annual or flexible packages, including the option to add on commuter bike storage and locker hire, from £44.99 per month. Unwind after your workout in the Nordic sauna – the perfect place for muscle recovery – and grab a protein shake, blended freshly on site, to go.

StrongHer

Strength training is one of those things we know we should be doing, but it can be tricky getting started if you’re a beginner. StrongHer is London’s first women-only strength training gym that’s on a mission to create a safe space for women from all socio-demographic backgrounds. Diversity can be seen through its membership – over a third of members are Muslim. As well as quality equipment, the studio also has large changing rooms, a chillout area and protein shake bar. Your first six classes are £30; and it costs £99 per month thereafter for unlimited classes. If you’re just looking to use the gym floor, expect to pay £50 per month or £36 per month at off-peak times.

Mission E1

Headed up by Genny Wilkinson Priest, the former yoga director of Triyoga, Mission E1 is doing things differently. Set in a converted beer house in Shoreditch, the light-filled space has five studios, which, as of early March, will offer several types of yoga as well as mobility, breathwork and strength training. You’ll also find treatment rooms, a sauna and restaurant for post-class refuelling. There will be three tiers of membership, with the most accessible offering subsidised classes to the local community. Outreach programmes will also see Mission’s yoga teachers visiting local schools to make yoga more accessible.
