The Modern Guide To Looking After Your Teeth
Prioritise Your Oral Microbiome
We’ve all heard about the gut microbiome, but fewer people realise the mouth has its own ecosystem – one that plays a crucial role in overall health. Home to more than 700 species of bacteria, the oral microbiome influences inflammation, immunity and even digestion. “A healthy body begins with a healthy mouth,” says Dr Reena Wadia, founder and gum specialist at RW Perio. “Research suggests links between gum disease and systemic conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and Alzheimer’s.” To keep your oral microbiome in balance, experts now recommend probiotics designed specifically for the mouth. Supplements like Invivo’s Bio.Me Oral and probiotic toothpastes such as Gutology introduce beneficial bacteria to help combat harmful microbes. Diet is also key, says dentist Dr Rhona Eskander: “Fermented foods, reduced sugar intake, and proper hydration all support a healthy oral microbiome. Crunchy fruits and vegetables help clean teeth naturally, while leafy greens strengthen enamel. Even green tea, rich in antioxidants, can reduce bad bacteria.”
Rethink Fluoride
Fluoride has long been the go-to for cavity prevention, but hydroxyapatite – a naturally occurring mineral found in bones and teeth – is gaining traction as an equally effective, fluoride-free alternative. Unlike fluoride, hydroxyapatite binds directly to teeth, repairing tiny cracks and shielding against acid erosion. “There’s a strong case for exploring fluoride-free options,” says naturopathic nutritionist Jess Shand. “Concerns over fluoride toxicity, thyroid disruption and potential neurological effects have led many to seek alternatives. Overexposure in childhood can result in dental fluorosis, causing white spots or streaks on enamel. In adults, around 50% of ingested fluoride is excreted, but the rest accumulates in bones and the brain’s pineal gland. Children, however, absorb up to 80% directly into their bones.” For those opting out, alternatives like hydroxyapatite, xylitol, baking soda, and coconut oil can still strengthen and protect teeth – without the risks.
Don’t Neglect Your Gums
Gums are just as important as teeth – if not more so – when it comes to oral health. At RW Perio, Reena and her team focus on gum care as a vital part of overall wellbeing. “The connection between gum disease and general health is undeniable. In the last six months alone, we identified 12 patients with undiagnosed diabetes during routine gum check-ups, highlighting how oral health can provide life-saving insights,” she explains. Brushing your teeth twice daily is essential, but it’s not enough on its own. “Most people clean their teeth but neglect the gum line, where bacteria get trapped,” Reena says. “Interdental brushes are a must, and any signs of bleeding, swelling, bad breath, or shifting teeth should never be ignored.” And if you’re considering aesthetic treatments like Invisalign, whitening, or bonding, addressing gum health first will help ensure long-term results.
Swap Mouthwash For A Tongue Scrape
If you haven’t yet incorporated tongue scraping into your routine, now’s the time. “It’s not just a wellness trend – there’s solid science behind it,” says Rhona. “The tongue harbours bacteria that contribute to bad breath and cavities. Scraping removes more bacteria than simply brushing.” Some experts believe tongue scraping also aids digestion by priming the gut with enzyme-rich saliva. Stainless steel and copper scrapers are the most effective. “Make it a daily habit,” says Reena. “Do it first thing in the morning to clear overnight bacterial build-up. It’s a ten-second step that makes a big difference.” For Mahsa Nejati, dental surgeon and founder of MAHSA, tongue scraping is a smarter alternative to alcohol-based mouthwashes, which can disrupt the oral microbiome and cause dryness. “Instead, opt for a natural, pH-balanced mouthwash that supports enamel health.”
Upgrade To A Smart Toothbrush
Electric toothbrushes have long been recommended over manual ones, but the latest models take oral care to the next level with AI-driven technology and advanced sensors. Smart toothbrushes – like the Oral-B iO Series – now track your brushing habits in real time, offering feedback via apps that show areas you’ve missed or where you’re brushing too hard. Sonic toothbrushes – like Suri – are also gaining popularity for their ability to break up plaque more effectively than manual brushing. For dentist Dr Alexandra Day, a sonic toothbrush is a must for smart brushing. “A sonic toothbrush provides a superior clean and when used with the correct technique has a lower risk of causing gum recession and abrasion damage when compared to the original oscillating electric toothbrush,” she tells us. “Brands like Suri go one step further – its clever castor oil bristles are gentle on the gums, too.”
Get A Supercharged Clean
For a next-level clean that goes beyond your standard hygienist appointment, Nejati Clinic’s Oral Detox & Cleansing treatment offers a cutting-edge approach to oral health. The treatment starts with a gentle, deep clean that removes harmful bacteria using Swiss-made salt and mineral technology, followed by a herbal antiseptic treatment to soothe gums and fight inflammation, and LED therapy to promote healing. More than just a dental clean, the holistic treatment is designed to enhance oral health and optimise wellbeing, recognising the crucial link between the mouth and overall health.
See The Right Experts
The trend for teeth tweakments shows no sign of slowing down. But for great results, knowing where to go matters. The A.B.C Smile team – based in Fitzrovia – are a new generation of dentists moving away from invasive procedures towards a bespoke, more natural approach. Led by Dr Edward Li and Dr Tanya Patel, the clinic combines cutting-edge techniques to align, brighten and contour teeth – enhancing both function and aesthetics. “By restoring tooth volume and alignment, we can subtly lift the lower face, enhance lip fullness, and define the jawline for a more youthful appearance,” they explain. Whether you’re considering whitening, bonding or alignment treatments, strong teeth and healthy gums are essential for lasting results, and taking a more holistic approach – by balancing the oral microbiome and upgrading your tools – may be the solution to enhancing both your smile and wellbeing.
