Every New Michelin-Starred Restaurant In The UK & Ireland

Each October, the brightest lights in the restaurant industry descend on the capital for the culinary ceremony of the year: the unveiling of the Michelin Guide. This week’s awards threw up some bold new choices. Read on for the ultimate roundup of where to book for special-occasion dining in 2020…

This week, Michelin announced the UK establishments that have made next year’s Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland. At the Hurlingham Club in Fulham, the ceremony unveiled 28 newly decorated restaurants and celebrated a record number of gained or retained stars.

Each year, Michelin’s team of anonymous restaurant inspectors award venues with one star (“high-quality cooking, worth a stop”), two stars (“excellent cooking, worth a detour”) or three stars (“exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey”). For the first time in years, the capital gained one of the latter.

The Lecture Room & Library at Sketch – overseen by French chef Pierre Gagniere and run by head chef Johannes Nuding – has held two stars since 2013. It becomes the fifth UK restaurant to earn the ultimate accolade, joining Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London, and the Fat Duck and Waterside Inn in Bray, Berkshire. Mourad Mazouz, the owner of Sketch, commented: “It’s a long journey from a small village in Algeria, where I come from. It is Johannes especially and Pierre who deserve the stars – they are really the ones who make all the details in the plate. Pierre is an unbelievable genius.”

In London, Anne Sophie Pic’s La Dame de Pic at the Four Seasons Ten Trinity Square secured an impressive two stars, while four new restaurants picked up their first Michelin star. Eateries earning their first accolade include Mãos in Shoreditch (an unusual destination for the traditional Michelin guide), Japanese spot Endo at The Rotunda in Shepherd’s Bush, Dysart Petersham in Richmond and Da Terra, which opened in the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green.

The evening also brought great news for restaurants across the rest of the UK, with 19 establishments picking up their first star. Most notable was Mana, which won Manchester’s first star in 40 years. Launched in October last year, Simon Martin’s restaurant was praised for its nods to Nordic cuisine.
